A musical evening taking place this weekend is being described as ‘an exciting meeting of creatives.’

While the music and musicians will take centre stage, the real star of the show is set to be a new, handmade viola.

The hand-made instrument will be making its first public appearance in concert at Fennelly’s of Callan on Saturday next, August 9, as part of the AKA fringe festival.

West of Ireland musician Ultan O’Brien will be playing the newly crafted viola for the first time not just in front of an audience, but also in front of the instrument’s maker and illustrator.

The viola, or ‘alto fiddle’, was hand-crafted by luthier Muireann Ní Sheoige Eachthigearn in Cork and illustrations were hand-drawn on the beautiful instrument by illustrator Denise Conroy.

Denise also designed the poster for the Saturday night gig.
She said it had been ‘a joy’ to be part of the creative collaboration.

On the night, support for Ultan will come from Mick Foley from Kilkenny Uilean Pipers Club.

Ultan’s new album Dancing the Line has been described as brilliant and hearing the tunes live, on Saturday, is an opportunity not to be missed. His music is a mix of experimental and traditional fiddle playing.
Tickets for the gig are on sale at tinyurl.com/ ultanobriencallan.
