Helping the Bereaved
Kilkenny Bereavement Support, a voluntary organisation that has quietly served the people of Kilkenny for more than 35 years, continues to provide support for those coping with bereavement.

It was founded in the city over three decades ago, offers free and confidential assistance to individuals mourning the loss of a loved one. Volunteers, specially trained for the role, are available to meet with the bereaved and to remain alongside them for as long as they feel the support is needed. For some, this may be a single meeting; for others, it is a longer journey. Central to the service is the act of listening.

“What most people want above all else is to tell their story, and to know they are being heard in confidence,” a spokesperson for the group explained.

“Every grief is different, and our volunteers provide the space and support for that to unfold.”

The service is facilitated at Villa Maria, Talbot’s Inch, where the Sisters of Mercy have kindly made rooms available for KBS service. Located beyond St Luke’s Hospital, Villa Maria provides a tranquil backdrop for the meetings, and many attending have spoken of the peace and welcome they encounter on arrival.

Those who have availed of the support describe it as invaluable. In a world that quickly returns to routine, they say, Kilkenny Bereavement Support offers a welcome pause — a safe environment to speak about loss and remember those who have died. The service is non-denominational, free of charge, and open to anyone willing to travel to Kilkenny.
