Kilkenny girl Ailbhe Griffin, daughter of local racehorse trainer Eoin Griffin was recently announced as a finalist for the Dublin Fashion Festival ‘Young Designer of the Year’ 2016.
A total of 12 finalists have been chosen for this year’s competition. The finalists’ designs were displayed in the Powerscourt Centre for the past number of weeks. The ‘Young Designer of the Year’ catwalk show and competition takes place at the Bank of Ireland, College Green today (Wednesday).
The designers’ pieces will be showcased in front of key fashion influencers including some of Ireland’s established designers and fashion buyers, as they compete for the coveted title of ‘Young Designer of the Year’.
Ailbhe has just completed her final year of Fashion Design at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), Dublin. Her final year collection “Inner Thoughts, Outer Reflections” was showcased at the Westbury Hotel for the 2016 NCAD Annual Fashion Show, where she was named runner up in the Brown Thomas ‘Designer to Watch’ competition.
Ailbhe has recently been attracting attention in the Dublin fashion scene, her whimsical creations using mind mapping techniques drawn onto fabric and head turning handbags have created quite a stir. It is this collection that has gained her a place in the Dublin Fashion Festival final; it expresses emotion and thought processes through clothing, combined with imaginative colour combinations and innovative use of fabrics.
Along with the coveted title prize, the winner will also get the invaluable opportunity to shoot a fashion portfolio with fashion photographer, Barry McCall and a €2,000 bursary from West Coast Cooler, one of the events sponsors.
The Kilkenny designer came in third place at the NCAD awards earlier this year.
