Writing is difficult. Acting is difficult. Once in a generation, if you’re lucky, will emerge a voice and a talent that can encapsulate that time. Harder still is to find a group of actors who can recreate this encapsulation. Who can cast aside all distractions and contradictions, and find in one man’s words, another man’s world.

Throughout the decades Roddy Doyle has proven himself to be the voice of not one, but many generations. His language true and his focus direct. He has captured moments and communities like very few are capable of. Through novels, screenplays and stage plays, our senses are enveloped with the words of Roddy Doyle and the memories and emotions of his words ring out in our ears and stay with us long past the last page, the closing credits or the curtain calls.

More than this, we laugh. In only ways that an Irish audience, to an Irish author can laugh. And to situations we are uniquely informed to. This is the heart of writing…and the actor’s job in this?

To bring it to life!

And life is what we see on stage, rehearsal after rehearsal and night after night with KATS Theatre’s production of Roddy Doyle’s ‘WAR’. Humour and heartache walk hand in hand. Comedy and catastrophe are afoot with every step across the stage and with every breath of dialogue. Friends become foes, dormant rivalries renewed, hidden loves and jealousies exposed. Every inch of what makes us, us, transposed from the page and played out in beautiful harmony by this ensemble cast of sixteen, under the direction of Kevin Mooney. And above all else, entertainment is ensured…as I’m sure Roddy Doyle himself would want, and expect.

Set to the backdrop of a pub quiz in North Dublin City, circa 1989 - this production marks the first time that Roddy Doyle’s ‘WAR’ will be staged to a Kilkenny audience. Filled with a nostalgic kick of comedy, drama and sentimentality, this assures itself to be one of the ‘not to miss’ shows of 2016.
