Music in the Garden, Trouble Pilgrims among highlights of Kilkenny music trail this week

Fantastic lineup of entertainment in city and county as end of July approaches

Trouble Pilgrims play Ryan's on Friday evening

The sun may be starting to slow down its activity a little but there’s no sign of the music fading any time soon.

Plenty to enjoy across the city and county with afternoon and evening offerings for those of you not able to commit to night time sessions. Set Theatre at Langton’s gets things started on Wednesday with a Summertime Party organised by the Community Radio Kilkenny City crew. Swing by to enjoy a range of local performers with more details below.

Thursday’s treat is in the form of Phil Coulter at Langton’s Ballroom. The pianist and performer who also helped to pen hits for the likes of the Bay City Rollers and Elvis as well as a number of key Eurovision Song Contest tunes, takes to the local stage from 8pm.

Nearby at Billy Byrne’s Bar The Sofa Sessions features OKO live in the garden. Doom, funk science & expansive improv is what’s promised there from 9pm when you can catch the talents of Shane Latimer, DJackulate, Darragh O’Kelly & Shane O’Donovan.

Friday’s fare includes a seven-piece crew from Waterford at the Left Bank from 10pm. Thank Funk typically play classics from the likes of Chic, Earth Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson and Jamiroquai and are always fun to attend.

While the late gig sees Trouble Pilgrims at Ryan’s Bar. The Dublin fivesome have been providing high-energy, primal, spacey rock since the early seventies. Their dedication to their craft truly shows at their live gigs which often includes a selection of songs from the back catalogue of The Radiators which a number of the band members performed with.  Enjoy the music & the performance from 10.30pm.

Saturday’s back to Ballykeeffe Amphitheatre after a week break in their summer set. Gates open at 7pm when opening act of stunning local based trio of Kevin Bruce, Mary Russell & Kairen Waloch will entertain. They’re followed at 8pm by the headlining team of Hamsandwich, a Dublin-based five-strong talent which has an amazing sound & continues to be one of the country’s main musical boasts.

On the same night in the city Liam McCormack plays the bar at the Home Rule Club. While at Brewery Corner you can enjoy the third instalment of Atom with quality Techno. Line-up there includes Jack Cullen, Aidan Murphy and Michael Larkin.
On the same stretch John Cleere’s Bar & Theatre host Birds of Chicago from 9:30pm. A collective constructed around husband and wife duo JT Nero & Allison Russell, they’ve played here before as part of the Kilkenny Roots Festival – if you didn’t get to enjoy them then here’s your chance to rectify things!  A must if you love Americana & folk.

Then from 10pm covers band Music Junkies play Rafter Dempsey’s.

Sunday has the last of the Music in the Garden series at Kilkenny Castle grounds. The sessions have been taking place from 3pm each week for the month of July with different brass bands featured.
