PICTURES: Popular Kilkenny sergeant retires from the Force

After 40 years of dedicated service, Sergeant Ted Hughes, who was stationed at Thomastown Garda Station has retired.

Superintendent Anthony Farrell congratulated his colleague on an impressive career and wished him the best in his future.

"Ted had a tremendous ability to connect with people, especially the vulnerable in our community. Because he genuinely cared, he had an ability to listen to people and to understand a situation. He really was the epitome of a community policeman putting organisational needs of keeping our own communities safe, sometimes above his own."
