Farmers urged to ensure gates are secured
A local councillor is attempting to raise awareness about the potentially fatal impact of farm gates being left unsecured or becoming unsecured on local roads.
Cllr Fidelis Doherty stated she was involved in an incident recently where a farm gate swung across the road while she was driving and evasive action had to be taken.
"I am calling on Kilkenny County Council to ensure that gates at agricultural openings on the county's road network do not pose a serious risk to vehicular traffic," she said.
"Many are positioned with the gates opening out onto roads, as opposed to being directed into fields/access points."
The councillor stated that she is also aware of an incident in a neighbouring county where a cyclist tragically lost their life due to an incident involving an unsecured gate.
She intends to put forward a motion at next month's meeting of Kilkenny County Council to raise awareness around the issue that'll hopefully lead to meaningful change.
"In most cases, it's an easy fix, and it's an easy fix that could save a life," she added.
