Some of the thick hedging along the border of the Bellfield Estate, Ferrybank, County Kilkenny
Bellfield residents in Ferrybank in South Kilkenny have been expressing concerns about the fate of the hedgerow that runs alongside the estate, a local councillor has stated.
Cllr Fidelis Doherty raised the issue at this month's meeting of Piltown Municipal District Council.
"A few residents have been raising concerns about the hedgerow with fears that it may be cut back as part of the development in the area with the new greenway and I just wanted to get some clarity around that," she said.
"It's a built-up area so it's lovely to see an area of deep hedgerow there."
Area Engineer Stan Cullen responded to the councillor, noting that the 'need for securing the boundary' around the new greenway was agreed following recent incidents of anti-social behaviour in Bellfield and Fiadh Mor.
"The fencing follows the boundary of Bellfield estate and there are currently two or three metres of briars beyond that boundary," he added.
Cullen confirmed that a meeting has been held with Bellfield residents and that it's a matter that will be discussed further.
