A suggestion that more publicity be given to acts of vandalism was made by Mr R Aylward at the Kilkenny Co Council meeting. Calls were also made for more gardai and for foot patrols in the city.
Mr S Deegan, secretary, pointed out that the number of claims for malicious damage had risen from 32 last year to 52 this year and he thought this number would increase in the coming year. He told Mr Aylward he did not think it was possible to have claims covered by insurance.
Ald K Crotty TD, describing the increase as startling, said it should bring it home to people that they could be more public spirited and give the gardai any information they might have about these crimes and to show some respect for public property and private property.
FIRST ALL-IRELAND
Kilkenny have won their first All-Ireland for 1973 - and it has been won by a card player.
Seamus Connolly, Stonecarthy, Stoneyford, started his card playing in the licensed premises of Alfie Malzard in Stoneyford not long ago. He won the GAA’s Scor 25 competition in Dublin recently, which netted him £1,000 and £500 for the club he represented - Thomastown.
SENATE RACE IS ON
The Senate race is on and candidates are currently conducting and intensive campaign throughout the country.
The campaign is being fought very closely in the South-East where such organisations as the South Eastern Health Board and South Eastern Regional Development Organisation have made several candidates regional rather than local.
From Kilkenny there are as many as five candidates. Fianna Fail is represented by Mr Bob Aylward (Agriculture), Ald Michael McGuinness (Administrative) and Mr Peter Smithwick (Administrative).
Mr Aylward was a Dail candidate in the recent election. He was beaten for the last seat by Mr Jim Gibbons by the narrow margin of 577 votes. On his last outing for the Senate he was beaten for a seat by a single vote.
For Fine Gael Mr Tom Coogan, who also contested the Dail election, should win considerable support. The other Fine Gael runner is Mr Mattie Byrne, who was a Dail candidate some years ago.
ALL-STARS WIN
Kilkenny put up a magnificent fight against the All-Stars in the first game in San Francisco but lost by two points (5-10 to 3-14). Eddie Keher was top scorer of the game with 1-10.
