Update issued on progress being made on improving Kilkenny City Regional Water Supply

Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Kilkenny County Council, is progressing works on the Kilkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme to improve the security of water supply across Kilkenny City and surrounding areas, for over 28,000 people.

The project has now reached the midway point with significant progress being made.

The project will upgrade and increase capacity at the treatment plant at Troyswood which will become the primary water treatment plant facility for Kilkenny City. A new 2.9km watermain from Troyswood to the Radestown site will connect to the existing service reservoirs and enable the Radestown water treatment plant to be decommissioned.

Works carried out to date include the following: completion of the Radestown rising main, construction of a new control building with external and internal works ongoing; New process tanks constructed with fit-out ongoing and new intake and pump station works commenced

Seán Twohig, programme manager with Uisce Éireann said: "Uisce Éireann is delighted to be investing in this significant and essential project for the people of Kilkenny City. This significant upgrade is required to ensure compliance with drinking water regulations and reduce the risk of water quality issues in the future.

“The upgrade works carried out as part of this project will also ensure the continued delivery of safe, clean drinking water to residents and businesses in Kilkenny City and the surrounding area. We look forward to working with the local community as we continue investing in Kilkenny’s future.”

Currently Kilkenny City and surrounding area are serviced by two separate water treatment plants (WTPs) at Troyswood and Radestown. The existing Troyswood WTP requires a significant upgrade to provide robust water treatment facilities. The existing Radestown WTP provides for slow sand filtration followed by disinfection, however it is currently on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Remedial Action List (RAL).

The works are being carried out by Glan Agua on behalf of Uisce Éireann. Works commenced on the scheme in late 2021.
