Appeal to improve 'lethal' path in Thomastown

A Pedestrian Crossing needed in Summerhill, Portlaoise

Buggies and mobility devices are too wide for a narrow pathway in Thomastown, according to one councillor.

Cllr Deirdre Cullen said people with buggies or a disability have to go out on to the roadway and “it’s lethal.”

Chair of the Callan Thomastown Municipal District Committee, Cllr Cullen asked that work on the Mill Street path be continued around the corner at The Mall where a section of the footpath is not wide enough. “We need to look at a way to rectify it,” she said. Cllr Cullen said local drivers know to stay out from the path, but not all drivers will be familiar with the road.

Area engineer, Declan Murphy, said the stretch of path and roadway will have to be looked at  because to widen the path the carriageway will have to be narrowed.
