A band of brave and hardy souls are dipping in the freezing waters of the River Nore each day in February to raise funds for Amber Women’s Refuge.

This is the sixth year of Freezbrury in Kilkenny and it is growing each year as Claire Hynes explains.

“Freezbrury which is in its seventh year involves dipping in cold water whether it be river, sea or ice tub for every day in February but the date decides how long we spend in the water. So it’s one minute on February 1 and 29 minutes on February 29, thanks to this being a Leap Year.

“Alongside the daily dips we are also organising a monster raffle which is being supported by many local businesses so we can really push to raise as much funds as possible for Amber Women’s Refuge,” she said.

“This year we have decided to support Amber, a long established organisation based here in Kilkenny which is working to empower women and children of all cultures and backgrounds to live abuse-free lives,” said Claire.

A group of approximately sixty people are participating with the majority dipping in the River Nore on the Bleach Road in Kilkenny.

“The Weir is one of my favourite places, when you get into the water there it is like the world stops and you are just immersed in and listening to the sounds of nature,” added Claire.

According to Neil Gunning who started the event in Kilkenny back in 2018 with Robby Berry the rules are simple: You must immerse in swimwear only, with no wetsuits or boots allowed. Immersion is at chest height and everyone must dunk at least once during the time.

“In Kilkenny we recommend the weir on the Bleach road as the best and safest option for immersion as there is steps and handrails which allow you sit in the water while holding on also. Safety in numbers applies and we will have a WhatsApp group to arrange times to go with others.”

Anyone wishing to support the fundraiser can do so on idonate and every donor who gives €10 will be entered into the raffle.
