A number of councillors have raised concerns about speeding and road safety at a recent meeting of the Joint Policing Committee.
“There are a significant amount of road deaths and as councillors and gardaí we have to look at this closely. I am calling for a full time road safety officer for the council. The council and the gardaí have to work on this together. The provision of a road safety officer working in tandem with the gardaí would be most welcome,” said Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick.
Cllr Pat Dunphy also told the meeting that the issue of speeding ‘is coming up a lot on the doorsteps’.
“The focus has to be on enforcement especially on rural roods. If a garda car is seen regularly enough this would have an impact. Enforcement is what people are calling for,” he said.
Cllr Deirdre Cullen echoed the sentiments raised.
“It is a huge issue, how are we going to police it with depleted garda resources,” she said.
Cllr John Coonan called for speeding ramps to be put in place in housing estates to tackle the issue.
