There are inadequate provisions for vehicle parking in many housing estates constructed during the Celtic Tiger.

That’s according to Cllr Pat Dunphy, who raised the issue at the most recent meeting of Piltown Municipal District.

“Older housing estates are badly stuck for parking,” he said.

“It’s happening a lot in Celtic Tiger estates that were built with little emphasis placed on parking.

“Residents are parking on the grass in these estates and out on the road. There’s no place to go.”

Area Engineer Stan Cullen agreed with the point raised by Cllr Dunphy.

“You’re right, some older estates can have difficulties,” he said.

When queried by Cllr Dunphy about what local residents in estates impacted by parking issues could do to alleviate the problem, the area engineer suggested ‘looking at an application under the Community Involvement Scheme (CIS) that involves a monetary contribution from the residents’.

“We would also suggest the formation of resident committees,” he said.

“I don’t think the council will be putting money towards parking facilities.”
