Plenty to see and do at St Canice's Cathedral for Culture Night!

There are free activities and entertainment at St Canice's Cathedral on Culture Night

Celebrate Culture Night at St Canice's Cathedral on Friday, September 20 with activities and entertainment for all members of the community.

With late entry to St. Canice’s Cathedral, take the opportunity to see our current exhibition of The Red Book of Ossory, a 700-year-old manuscript written by the Bishop of Ossory Richard Ledrede, in the 14th Century.

A fun filled drop-in art workshop for families will take place also in the Cathedral between 5pm and 7pm. Participants will work with artist Sandra McAllister to create their own print with the theme of The Red Book of Ossory – looking at its important historical significance in Kilkenny. Join us for this workshop to create a record of Kilkenny’s present by creating a visual diary. Adults and Children alike will be invited to create and print an image, one print for the diary and a copy to take home. This is a drop-in event with no booking required.

If you are curious about the history of the stained-glass windows of St. Canice’s Cathedral, join us for a tour at 6pm. This exclusive tour will include an in-depth description of a selection of these windows, focusing on their richly illustrated Christian symbolism, the aesthetics, craftsmanship and the local family histories they commemorate. Each window tells its own unique story amidst their ancient surroundings. To secure a place on this free tour, see www.stcanicescathedral.ie for more details.

At 7.30pm join one of our bell ringers as they lead you on a behind the scenes tour of the bell tower.  This rare tour will allow visitors to experience first-hand the Bell Tower Room in the heart of St. Canice’s Cathedral. Learn about the tower’s fascinating history, witness a demonstration of bell ringing and have the special opportunity to ring one of the St. Canice’s Cathedral bells! Booking is required to secure a place on this free tour.

Finally, to end the evening of culture, and to follow on from a successful summer residency, tap your feet along to a live and energetic performance by Ceoltóirí Kilkenny – for the very best of Irish music, song, dance and storytelling.
