St Canice’s Credit Union celebrates international Credit Union Day in Kilkenny

Members who visited branches were met with cupcakes and goodies as well as the chance to enter a draw for prizes

The staff and volunteers of St Canice’s Credit Union celebrated International Credit Union Day on Thursday with a special Member Day across their branch network.

Members who visited branches were met with cupcakes and goodies as well as the chance to enter a draw for prizes supplied by local businesses as the credit union’s 60th anniversary celebrations continue.

In the High Street Kilkenny branch, KCLR were on hand with their daily show to help mark the occasion and a number of special guests visited on the day. David Malone, CEO of the Irish League of Credit Unions helped to cut the cake and spoke about the place of credit unions in modern Irish society. He explained the broad range of services St Canice’s now provide, from current accounts to mortgages all while maintaining a local and friendly service.

Alan Moore from the ILCU Foundation - the international development arm of the Irish League of Credit Unions - spoke about the impact they are making in Sierra Leone and Ethiopia helping locals to attain financial independence all from the support of Credit Union members. St Canice’s presented a cheque to the foundation on the day for €10,000 on behalf of their members.

CEO of St Canice’s Carmel Butler spoke on the day about the contribution of volunteers to the movement noting that many of the current Board and volunteers were present on the day to meet members. She also reiterated the importance of marking the 60th anniversary and the anniversary and the recent commemorative pullout featured in the Kilkenny People. .

Ms Butler drew attention to all the additional initiatives that are ongoing, scholarships for leaving cert students, an upcycle competition running in local secondary schools aswell as the Community Connect Fund. To further mark the milestone year, St  Canice’s also launched their brand new website featuring all their product and services with highlights including a page dedicated to the prize draw and improved usability of the site for all members. Closing out the event, Stephen Mc Laughlin, President of St Canice’s and David Malone jointly cut the commemorative cake to be shared with all the members.
