Kilkenny County Council has provided an update regarding the refurbishment and opening of the historic gaol cells at the Courthouse on Parliament Street in Kilkenny City.
Raising the motion at the latest sitting of the Kilkenny City Municipal District, local Fianna Fáil councillor, John Coonan expressed a desire to see the site maximised to its ‘full potential’ requesting the landmark be included on the Medieval Mile trail once refurbishment works have taken place.
“It is a feature we would like to develop,” Director of Services at Kilkenny County Council Tim Butler said.

Mr Butler confirmed the site is included as an objective on the council’s Tourism Strategy 2023-28 with a feasibility study set to take place in 2027 or 2028.
Meanwhile, refurbishment works continue at Kilkenny’s Town Hall with the iconic landmark closed to politicians, council officials and the wider public for at least 18 months.
The addition of an elevator will assist those with mobility issues, while works to refurbish the clock tower and dungeon beneath will also be completed and open to the public, the latter for the very first time.
Local councillor, independent Eugene McGuinness queried if progress updates on the Town Hall could be provided to representatives and whether councillors could vote prior to any alterations to the original Town Hall plans being carried out.
Director of services Tim Butler confirmed a workshop is planned for elected members on the matter to update them on progress.
