Fianna Fáil TD for Carlow/Kilkenny, Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere, has hailed the increase to carers across Carlow and Kilkenny who have gained access to the Carer’s Support Grant.
The Carer’s Support Grant is an annual payment made to carers who get Carer's Allowance, Carer's Benefit or Domiciliary Care Allowance.  It can also be paid to certain other carers providing full-time care.
By way of Parliamentary Question, Deputy Cleere asked the Minister for Social Protection, Dara Calleary the number of carers in Kilkenny and Carlow that received the carer’s support grant in 2025 and how the number of recipients this year compares to 2020.
As of June 2025, 2,720 people in Kilkenny and 2,048 people in Carlow received the Carer’s Support Grant – a 33% increase across the constituency since 2020.
Speaking on the matter Cleere said: “Carers do phenomenal work in homes and communities across the country. Their kindness and commitment to the cause knows no bounds.
He added: “That is why I was so pleased to hear from the Minister that there has been a 23% increase in Kilkenny and 10% in Carlow since 2020 respectively. This is fantastic news, and something that is to the forefront of the Government’s thinking.
Concluding Deputy Cleere said progress has been made in relation to carers, but we must continue to provide support for them as outlined in the Programme for Government.
“I am delighted to see over 4,700 carers receiving support since 2020, and I look forward to more carers across the constituency access these supports,” he said.
“Although we have made progress, we fully recognise more needs to be done. Fianna Fáil in government is committed to enhancing supports available to carers, who make an enormous and selfless contribution to society.
