Denise Murphy, ambassador and Kilkenny champion for the Memory Walk
County Kilkenny will host an Alzheimer’s Memory Walk event this year as part of the nationwide Alzheimer’s Memory Walk supported by Aviva, taking place on Sunday, September 21 in honour of World Alzheimer’s Day.
The Kilkenny event will be held at Kilkenny Castle Park, inviting families, friends, and the local community to walk in solidarity with the 64,000 people living with dementia in Ireland—and to remember those who are no longer with us.
Now in its sixth year, the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk supported by Aviva is more than just a fundraiser—it’s a celebration of connection, compassion, and community. In 2024, nearly 3,500 walkers nationwide raised over €150,000 to support vital services including Daycare, Support Groups, Family Carer Training, Social Clubs, Memory Cafés, and the ASI National Helpline.
Local champion Denise Murphy, an ambassador for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, will lead the Kilkenny Memory Walk in memory of her late father, Michael, who sadly passed away in 2023 at just 66 years old after living with dementia for a decade. The walk will begin at Switzers Gate on Castle Road (meeting time to be confirmed) and will take participants on a scenic route through Kilkenny Castle Park.

Michael was formally diagnosed with Early Onset Dementia in 2013, after three difficult years of noticing the first signs. As an only child, Denise stepped in to support her mum while they all adjusted to the changes that dementia brought into their lives.
They found comfort and strength through The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, where Michael attended the Kilkenny Day Centre most weekdays. The support, connection, and respite it provided became a vital lifeline for the whole family.
“I would encourage everyone who can to register now at www.memorywalk.ie to join me this World Alzheimer’s Day, Sunday September 21 in Kilkenny Castle Park," said Denise.
With nearly 40 events taking place across Ireland, the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk supported by Aviva is a powerful reminder of the strength found in community. Whether you walk in memory of a loved one, in support of someone living with dementia, or simply to show solidarity, your support makes a difference.
