Following a fatal accident on the Callan bypass road, earlier this year, Cllr Joe Lyons has reiterated his call for the underpass under the N76 to be used as a pedestrian crossing.

The Municipal District chairman was speaking at the recent meeting of Callan Thomastown Municipal District councillors.
Area Engineer, Declan Murphy, said the suggestion had been brought to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) designers at Tramore House.

A draft plan for the Callan bypass has designated crossing points, including at the Westcourt junction and the Bretts junction, Mr Murphy said, but doesn’t take into account the underpass.
These crossing points are not pedestrian crossings, he clarified.

The current TII plan is to tighten the vehicle carriageway and widen paths to three metres. Mr Murphy said he has seen this plan and it’s good. It must now undergo a safety audit.

Cllr Lyons suggested if the use of the underpass was suggested by Mr Murphy it would be taken into account by TII. “It’s taking people off the road and 100% safer,” Cllr Lyons said.

Designated crossings are ok, Cllr Lyons said, but people are still crossing a busy road.

Mr Murphy said the underpass is not for pedestrians at the moment, and there is a flooding issue there, in the Moate Field, but he said he will bring the suggestion to TII and see what the response is.
