GAA NEWS - The U16 Hurlers had a good win over Ballyhale Shamrocks on Thursday evening last in the Preliminary round of the Championship played at Johns Park. They play Clara in the second round or the quarter final on Saturday evening next at a time and venue to be confirmed. The Minor team play James Stephens at Tom Ryall Park this week in the Roinn A League semi final (see results). The Junior A hurlers play Young Ireland of Gowran in the quarter final of the North Junior A Championship at Palmerstown this week also.

The U12 John Locks Tournament - The U12 hurlers were beaten by Erins Own of Castlecomer in the final of this tournament played in Callan on Sunday last. In the league section of this competition the young hurlers beat Thomastown, Danesfort, James Stephens and O’Loughlins and drew with Erins Own. Well done to all concerned. Prior to the final all competing teams took part in a parade from John Locke Park to the Callan CB Grounds.

FRESHFORD COMMUNITY MARKET - Freshford Community Market which started up in the last few weeks and has moved to Saturday morning is very successful and is growing in statute. The market will be held each Saturday in the Community Hall from 11am to 1 pm. So go along and support your local Community effort and have a tea or coffee and some homemade scones or cakes with all locally produced ask for local support. SOCCER - Training has resumed for the Junior soccer team in preparation for the forthcoming season and will continue every Wednesday evening at the Sportsfield at Woodview at 7.30pm. They will play in the 2nd Division this season. The Junior side played Orchard villa in a challenge on Thursday evening last and played St.Johns in a challenge on Sunday morning. Freshford Town training for U11 & U12’s (last years U10’s & U11’s) commences for the new season at Woodview on Thursday 16th August at 6pm, all boys welcome.  Registration for boys and a parents meeting for both teams will be held shortly ( more details next week).  Work is continuing in the pitch at present for the forthcoming season. Pitch Development Draw- There was a draw for a trip to a Premier League Game Man Utd –v- Fulham or Liverpool v Man City recently. This fantastic prize of a weekend for 2 includes 2 nights in City Centre Hotel plus match tickets, all travel and transfers included was a fund raising draw for the Club and the lucky winner was Michael Burke, Ballylarkin. Congrats to Michael. Sellers prize went to his son James. .

CiORcal Gaelach - The Club had a lovely evening to celebrate the first year of the Ciorcal. Recently. Joan O’Donovan won the trath na gceist and a great Comhru finished the evening. The Ciorcal will recommence in med September.

UPPERCOURT RESTAURANT - The newly refurbished and luxurious Loop Restaurant at Uppercourt Manor, Freshford opened recently to the public and s open each Sunday for meals from 12.30 to 5pm. with great quality and value and also open on booking other evenings with choice of menu available. CAMOGIE NEWS - St. Lachtains Senior camogie girls qualified for the 2012 league final on the 31st August with a narrow win over Thomastown in Palmerstown on Wednesday evening last. With a full squad available, it was the local girls who got the first score from Imelda Kennedy set up by Aine Connery.Thomastown responded quickly with a point and that set the pace of the game as it was score for score from both teams throughout the game. Captain Marie O’Connor got the first goal of the game about 15mins in while there were also points from place balls and play from both teams, Thomastown led at the break by 2 points with the help of the Farrell sisters. Freshford upped the pace of the game in the second half while Thomastown always cause a threat taking their points at every given opportunity. A solid Freshford defence of Fiona Dowling , Mary Pat O’Sullivan and Claire Dermody to mention, kept the Thomastown forwards scores to a minimum though. While Sinead Cash in goal was consistent throughout the 60 mins. It was Captain Marie O’Connor who scored her second goal of the evening, first time ground stroke straight to the back of the net! The Connery sisters Sinead and Aine got their names on the scoreboard with some fine taken points from their midfield positions. While sub Lydia Fitzpatrick made a valuable contribution when introduced in the second half along with Maureen Walsh coming on in the half back line. With just  couple of minutes on the clock it was the local girls that were up by 2 points, at which stage Thomastown were awarded a close in free which was driven straight over the bar. The Referee blew his whistle and the Freshford girls held out a by a single point on a final score of 2-11 to 1-13! The Un16 girls quarter final game against St. Anne’s has been rescheduled for Wed 15th August. The Club wish to thank all who supported their fundraising Cake Sale on Sunday last in the Community Hall! There will be a Clothes Collection at the end of August, Please take note for all interested in cleaning out those wardrobes!

ACTIVE RETIREMENT GROUP - Freshford Active Retirement Group meet in the local Community Hall each Tuesday at3pm. New members are always welcome. The Group go bowling every second Tuesday to McDonagh Junction, Kilkenny. For more details contact Kathleen on 8832362or Joan on 8832316. Tai Chi Classes are now closed for the summer months and classes will resume in September.

CEMETeRY MASS - The annual cemetery mass was held in Tulla Cemetery on Friday evening last with a big crowd in attendance. Thanks to all those who helped to prepare for the occasion and to people for cleaning up family graves.

Afterschool Service -Oasis, Freshford & District Child Centre. Oasis Childcare Centre will be providing an Afterschool service from next September 1.30 - 5.45. The service will include picking up your child at the school, bringing them to Oasis where they will receive a hot meal followed by supervised study for approximately 1/2 hour. The remainder of the time will follow an exciting programme of activities indoor and outdoors. Fee: €13 per day. If you are on a social welfare payment you would be eligible for Subvention (CCS) Oasis when the charge would be €3 per day for the complete service.
