The centre is hoping to support up to 45 young adults
Irish missionary Sister Anne Healy who celebrated 25 years of charity work in the Philippines this year is appealing to the people of Kilkenny to support the renovation of a special needs centre.
Sister Anne is originally from Killenaule, Tipperary and recently returned home to Ireland and spent time in Kilkenny where she has family. She works with the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, who have been operating in Cebu, the Philippines, since 2000.
“We are working with adults with special needs and helping them to develop skills and find employment, we are the only group of nuns out here doing this week and we need donations to help to run a small centre,” she said.
The charity is developing a centre to help support adults who have additional needs providing them with education, training and work placement.
“We have started on the building but we need more donations in order to complete the project. Out hope is to try and build a small centre which will support 45 students. At the moment seven of our students use wheelchairs,” she added.
The project aims to provide inclusive education for young adults with intellectual disabilities, livelihoods, and health services to marginalised young adults with developmental disabilities.
Sister Anne left home at the age of 19 and entered the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary.
She made her first procession in 1972 and her final procession in 1978 and will celebrate her Diamond Jubilee in 2028. See www.www.sshjmcebu.org.
