Kilkenny communities hail 'gamechanger' for local water supplies

New government proposals to allow private developers build waste water treatment plants as part of their overall projects has been welcomed.


Small, residential developments in towns and villages across the county might now be able to go ahead, Cllr Deirdre Cullen said at the recent Callan Thomastown municipal district meeting.


Irish Water had previously given a date of 2029 before any work would take place in Bennettsbridge, which would be the first rural Kilkenny location to see development under their plans.


Cllr Michael Doyle suggested waste water plants that need to be upgraded also be included in the new scheme. The reality is, otherwise, all the small towns and villages they represent are going to take years to see development get off the ground, and “I don’t think they can wait,” he said. “This is going to be a game changer for rural Ireland.”
