Kilkenny Garda operation 'a huge success' with five arrests

The garda operation took place today in South Kilkenny

A major garda operation took place in South Kilkenny yesterday (Tuesday) targeting drink and drug drivers.

Approximately forty gardaí took part in the operation which focused on enforcement of the road traffic legislation.

Five people were arrested on suspicion of drug and drink driving and five vehicles were seized for no insurance. A large number of fines were also issued, for a range of road traffic offences, including to drivers for failing to have tax and non compliant registration numbers.

Divisional Roads Policing Inspector, Paul Donohoe said that the operation which involved high visibility checkpoints was ‘a huge success’.

“We concentrated on drink and drug drivers and also on learner drivers who are driving while unaccompanied and drivers who do not have valid insurance or are not using seatbelts,” said the inspector.

“As part of the operation we also tested a large amount of HGVs with no arrests. It is positive to see that there was compliance among the HGV drivers who were stopped with the road traffic legislation. Overall the operation was a huge success,”he added.

The operation took place at locations across South Kilkenny including Ferrybank and Slieverue
