Laois-Offaly TD Marcella Corcoran-Kennedy came to Heywood Community School as an invited guest of the Power of One group in the school Transition Year.
The Power of One is a project that the school participates in to raise awareness of the effect of climate change and instigate changes in our lives and activities. The focus of Power of One is for students to educate their peers, and the group has chosen the theme of reducing the carbon footprint of the students each in their own individual lives.
The group are called Na Siuloiri gan lorgcoise or ‘Walkers without footprints’, and they have as their motto: ‘Ag ceimine nios mo a lorgcoise lu’ - or ‘bigger steps to smaller footprints’. Among the activities they have done were to run poster competitions, have a survey of the students, making a DVD on the topic and inviting guest speakers including Ms Corcoran-Kennedy.
The students made contact with her through Facebook where they asked her to ‘Like’ their page outlining their activities. She in turn contacted them and established a dialogue leading to her coming to the school to speak to them and listen to their concerns.
She spoke of the government initiatives to combat climate change, and they in turn spoke of their work to promote individual change or the power of one person changing. It was an interesting exchange of views and a very rewarding experience for all concerned.
