Great win for Lisdowney in Roinn C championship

SCHOOLS WIN - Top Oil Roinn C Championship. Danesfort were out for revenge after a cruel defeat at the hands of Lisdowney a few weeks ago and started well going up 3 points in 5 minutes before Lisdowney settled, but the next 15 minutes was Lisdowney go ahead scoring 2 placed balls and a goal to a point for Danesfort. Lisdowney had a lot of play then for the remainder of the half but were plagued by wides; they did manage another 2 points before the half time whistle 1:4 to 0:4.

The second half was definitely all Lisdowney but the scoring was low as they continued to shoot off target claiming only 2 points from play as well as 2 frees, while all Danesfort’s 4 scores came directly from frees. Final score 1:8 to 1:7 for Lisdowney.

UNIFORM & SCHOOLBOOK SALE - Over the next few Saturday mornings it is hoped to sell on uniforms and books for the local schools. COMMUNITY GAMES ATHLETICS - Congratulations to all of the medal winners in Sunday’s Community Games County Kilkenny Athletics Finals in Scanlon Park, Kilkenny. Eimear Walsh came first in the Under 14 Girls Long Puck and will go on to represent Kilkenny at the Community Games National Finals at the end of August. Brandon Brophy came third in the Under 8s 60 metres, Tessa Doyle came second in the Under 10s 100 metres, Ciara Doyle came third in the Under 12s 100 metres and Gary O’Sullivan came third in the Under 14s 100 metres. This was a great achievement for Lisdowney and great credit must go to all the children who took part. A special thanks also to the adults who helped out on the day - particularly Peter Bergin, Dorothea Bergin, Mary Campion and Theresa Dunphy.

CAREERS IN MUSIC - is a summer workshop run under the aegis of Portlaoise Comhaltas with the support of Spink branch which includes Abbeyleix in it’s catchment area. The pilot project which is funded by Laois Partnership Ltd will take place at Abbeyleix Heritage House and is open to suitable young musicians who may or may not be members of Comhaltas.

The aim is to : (a)broaden the capacity of musicians who are attending secondary school through exposure to the commercial and production side of the business as well as performance under the guidance of professional performers acknowledged by the industry as innovative and successful.

(b)To seek accreditation at FETAC level 5 for modules entitled Music Theory & Practice and Music Industry Studies.

(c)To cater for a group approximately twenty five to thirty teenagers who have already demonstrated good proficiency in music/singing performance, by developing composition and orchestration skills necessary for a successful group/band.

JUNIOR A HURLING - Lisdowney lined out against St Martin’s last Saturday in Lisdowney, Lisdowney were well in control from the off, and the final whistle blew on a scoreline of 2:16 to 1:10.

UNDER 14 HURLING UNDER 14 LEAGUE - On Monday 18th Lisdowney lined out against Mooncoin at home. The SOuthern team played a fantastic game showing some outstanding skill and team play and defeated Lisdowney comfortably 5:11 to 4:2

SCHOOL CAMOGIE - The girls Under 14 team played Ballyragget last Tuesday evening. The Lisdowney girls played very well all over the pitch and put for the excellent Ballyragget keeper the final score difference may even have been much more. Full time score 7:4 to 4:2 for Lisdowney.

LOCAL HISTORY GROUP - The Fassidinin History Society in Castlecomer have invited representatives from all Kilkenny local history groups for a get-together in Castlecomer Library on Sunday 1st July at 3pm.

CEMETERY MASSES - Cemetery Masses will be held in Lisdowney on Friday, 6th July 2012, Rathbeagh on Monday, 9th July 2012, Tifeaghna on Wednesday, 11th July 2012, Clontubrid on Tuesday, 17th July 2012 and Aharney on Friday, 20th July 2012. All masses will commence at 7.30 pm.

WOODENBRIDGE PADDLERS - The Woodenbridge Paddlers will hold their annual sponsored duathlon and cycle tour in aid of the Make Believers charity group on Sunday July 8th. The event will also incorporate part of Kilkenny River Festival. Proceedings will get underway from the Woodenbridge at 11.30AM.when canoeists and leisure cyclists will start their respective journeys while sport cyclists will have a 12.30pm.start. A fun packed event which will include fly fishing demonstration, canoeing, bouncing castles, face painting, archery, rope course, rafting, and arts and crafts will be staged at the halfway point at the broken weir Ballyragget 2.00pm.where refreshments will also be served before continueing through Lisdowney to the finish in Cullahill where music and entertainment will be held in O”Connolls Bar.
