SENIOR CITIZENS PARTY - The party for the senior citizens, formerly known as the Day Centre party, was held on Thurs 13th December in The Castle Arms Hotel in Durrow. This party was for anyone of a certain age or anyone who could do with a day out. It was mentioned in the parish newsletter and in these notes and names were put on a list in the Credit Union A contribution of €10 each was collected to help defray the cost. A small group from Conahy Parish, about 15 people, were included with the Ballyragget numbers, 86 in all. These were then joined by their friends from Lisdowney for an enjoyable evening. A beautiful meal was followed by old time tunes, with some of the partygoers giving a few songs of their own. The many spot prizes added to the fun. As often is the case, local photographer Pat Farrell was on hand to take a few snaps and ensure we will not be forgotten! This is a joint venture with Lisdowney organising and financing their end, and Ballyragget/Conahy doing the same. In bygone times when the Day Centre was in existence, a grant was available to help with some of the cost, but that is no longer the case and so a great deal of fundraising and sponsorship was required. The following is an explanation of what money was received and how it was spent. Income - Credit Union €200 - Marie and John Holland €200 - St. Patrick’s GAA €250 - “25” Cards €400 - Fr Murphy €120 - Conahy Parish €200 - €10 contributions €860 - Church Gate Collections €584 - Supervalu Bag pack €572 Total €3,386. Expenditure - Hamper, Spot Prizes, Wine etc. €365 - Part cost of the band €170 - Bus €120 - Further Prizes €22- Cost of meal for Ballyragget/Conahy €1900Total €2,577. We really appreciate the contributions made by all of the above, as well as the spot prizes donated by a number of individuals and the Active Retirement Group. In addition, some people brought prizes to the party. All this, together with the beautiful gifts received from the Cub Scouts helped bring down the expenditure. We buy the wine and many of the prizes in Super Valu. The management and staff there are always so helpful. We appreciate this and the sponsorship of a beautifully presented hamper. A big thanks to those who stood at the Church Gates for the collection and to all the contributors. Likewise to all who gave up valuable time on Christmas Eve to bag pack. The generosity of the shoppers was astounding and means that we have something in the kitty for next year. The role of 8th Kilkenny Scout Group, Ballyragget, in organising the bag pack is much appreciated. Thanks also to the Credit Union staff, who were as helpful as ever throughout. Finally, heartfelt thanks to Bridget Ruth and her committee in Lisdowney for all the help and cooperation.

NAOMH BRID - The club extends best wishes to all of its members and friends for the coming year. The club Secretary, Sheila Gunner, is inviting all parents and friends to an important meeting, on Friday next, January 25th, at 7.30 pm in the Canon Malone Hall. This gathering is intended to prepare plans for the coming season. This year, Naomh Brid will be sixteen years in existence, and such is the popularity of camogie that more adults are needed, to help with the coaching of players and management of the club’s business. New helpers will be particularly welcome. We hope that people will be generous with their time and make a contribution to the promotion of the game. Camogie has a great tradition in the parish and who knows how many of our young players will achieve great success in the future? The club emphasises enjoyment in its training and games, with participation, and player improvement the intended outcomes. Training and home games are hosted in the GAA pitch, by kind permission of St. Patrick’s GAA Club. We look forward to a large attendance on Friday evening.
