Freshford: The Lion King roars in Freshford

THE LION KING - A lion King and a herd of animals are on the loose in Freshford. The local Tots to Teen group proudly present an adapted version of the Lion King featuring Madagaksker by Jason Paul Ryan. With Jason and his backroom helpers the group have been practicing for past number of months for this event.

The show runs Friday 25th January at 8pm and Saturday 26th January at 8.15pm and Sunday 27th there will be a matinee at 3pm. Admission at the door – Adults €6 children €3. Great prizes will be given on the raffle and on site shop for those show time treats. So go along and soak up the jungle atmosphere, sing along and join in the fun. Death - The death occurred last weekend at St.Catherines Nursing Home of Mr. Edward Delaney late of Gathabawn and Prague House. The deceased was well known in the locality and was a quiet and good living gentleman. His remains were removed to St.Lachtains Church on Friday evening and Burial took place on Saturday in St.Lachtains Cemetery following Requiem Mass. Sympathy is extended to his family.

SOCCER - Freshford Town had no teams in action last weekend. All games were called off due to the bad weather.

The fixtures for next week see the U11 boys at home to Evergreen at 11am on Saturday. The Junior side are at home to the Lions of Durrow (B) at 2pm. on Sunday. Training continues with Gary Barnaville every Saturday from 12 noon to 1pm for the 5 – 9 age group at Woodview. The Club has decided to collect 2 euro from each child ( family rates for two or more) each week and this money will go towards the running and further development of the grounds.You can follow the clubs progress on Facebook.

TABLE QUIZ - The Club will hold An Audio/Visual Table Quiz will be held in Kavanagh’s on Saturday night 2nd February ,  in aid of Freshford Town Schoolboys.  This will be their first quiz this season and they hope to build on the success of last seasons quizzes. A table of four is €20 plus there is a raffle on the night.  It is hoped for a big turnout on the night from the regular quiz goers and newcomers alike to this very entertaining night out.  Quizmaster will be Alan Franey who has put together a fun quiz, suitable for both young and old some with lots of sport, pop culture, quotations, music and movie clips questions from different era’s all shown on the two tv screens so come along for the craic and help raise funds for the schoolboys & club.

POKER WINNER - Jimmy Kenny was the overall winner of the Poker League in Kavanaghs before Christmas. A new Poker league is now under way . This is a free entry game with €10 rebuys and all are welcome. The game starts at 9pm.

GAA NEWS- St. Lachtains Bord na nOg hold their AGM this week in the Clubrooms ( full report next week)

Death - The death occurred last week at Prague House Freshford of Maureen Brennan late of Tullaroan. She was resident of Prague House for some time and was well know in the vicinity. Her remains were removed to Tullaroan Church and Burial took place in Tullaroan Cemetery following Requiem Mass. Deepest sympathy is extended to all her family.

FRESHFORD COMMUNITY MARKET - Please note that Freshford Community market will not take place on Saturday the 26th January as the Show is taking place in the hall that weekend. The market will reopen on Saturday 2nd February from 11am to 1pm. There are a good variation of goods on offer This is a community initiative and you are urged to go along and support your local Community t . The Group is asking especially for local support and thank all their customers for their continued support . Birthday - Birthday wishes go out to local man Tom Hayes, Ard Lachtain who celebrated another special birthday at the weekend with his friends in Kavanaghs.

VINCENT DE PAUL -The local St. Vincent de Paul Society meet each month on the last Thursday of each month. Thanks all those who donated so generously to the collection and those who gave personally to the appeal which was used to help people in need . IRISH CIRCLE - The “Ciorcal had a lovely night out in Café Sol Kilkenny at Christmas. An evening of scealaiocht andcraic was enjoyed by all. The “Cirocal” group will meet again in the middle of January after the Christmas break.

Best wishes - Best wishes are extended to local lad Eoin Guinan who leaves this week for Australia. Eoin was guest at farewell party in Kavanaghs on Saturday night last with his family and friends. Eoin was prominent member of St.Lachtains Hurling teams since his schoolboy days and he is wished all the best in his venture down under.

DANCE CLASSES - Social dance classes are held in St.Kierans Hall Johnstown continues each Wednesday evening at 8pm If you would like to learn to dance the Old time waltz, quick step, fox trot, jive etc.., you can go along on any Wednesday. GOLF- Freshford Golf Society hold their AGM in Farrells on Wednesday 30th January at9p.m sharp. All welcome including new members.

ST.LACTAINS NS - The process of enrolling new pupils for the school year 2013/14 is currently underway at St.Lachtain National School Freshford. Enrolment packs are ready to be sent out or can be collected at the school office. If you require one please contact the school office on 056 883240. The Committee would be obliged if forms could be completed and returned on or before the 8th February 2013. If you are new to the area or just a parent in the process of trying to decide which primary school to choose for your child please feel free to contact the school at the above number for an informal chat and tour of the school.. U21 CHAMPS VISIT - There was great excitement in the school on Monday of last week when they were honoured by the visit of the victorious St.Lachtains U21 County Champs and officials . Many of the team and management would have been past pupils of the school and quite a few of them would have been sitting in the school hall as recent as five or six years ago. The children got to meet their heroes and spent most of the afternoon signing autographs and posing for pictures with the silverware on display also. Well done to all concerned.

PARISH MASSES - Morning Mass in Freshford Church each morning of the week is at 9.30am except on Mondays . Mass in Prague House on Monday at 9.30am St. Catherine’s on Tuesday at 3pm. Tulla Church – Friday at 7.30pm. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in Prague house on Fridays from 10am to 5pm . All welcome.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT - Freshford Active Retirement Group meet every second Tuesday in the local Community Hall at 3pm with Bowling at McDonagh Junction on alternative Tuesdays . New members are always welcome. For details contact Kathleen on 8832362or Joan on 8832316 Thai Chi meetings will be held on Monday nights in Community Hall after the Christmas Break. New members welcome also.
