Danesfort- Revival of the Danesfort Derby

Danesfort Derby

Danesfort Derby

Last run in 2008 the Danesfort greyhound Derby is to get a new lease of life on this Friday June 14 at Kilkenny Greyhound Stadium. As part of a joint fundraiser between St Michaels National School building fund and Danesfort GAA a gala night is planned with first racing starting at 8pm.

The parish which is home to Sevenhouses coursing club where the dreams of Derby, Oaks or Masters Success are first viewed as the sapling makes his way up the 400 yard woodchip gallop. There is a rich family tradition of greyhound racing in the parish with the Hoban,Hughes, Leahy, Kelly and Sinnott families having enjoyed success down through the years.

The derby will be run under parish rules, born in, living in, trained in along with the “grandparent” clause being invoked to bring together the 6 of the finest dogs to have graced the James park track at this graded level.

To add to the occasion each dog will be appointed a sporting mascot and these will be lead by our most recent addition to the parish former Irish Derby winning jockey and now racehorse trainer Pat Shanahan. Training in Oldtown lane Pat will be one of 6 mascots on night with the other to be announced. Ticket @ €10 are available from St Michael s School or any GAA member and entry includes a fabulous draw with 1st prise being a pair of Tickets to “Bruce Springsteen” at his July Concert. This promise to be a great night and your support would be gratefully appreciated.

The Danesfort Trio got their Leinster Championship campaign off to a good start when Kilkenny defeated a gallant Offally by 0-26 to 4-9 in a sun drenched O’Moore Park, Tullamore, in the Leinster quarter-final last Sunday. Richie Hogan contributed 3 points from play to Kilkenny’s tally, with Paul Murphy playing in his usual corner back position. The third Danesfort clubman, Paddy Hogan got a run in the 58th minute and did no harm to his future Kilkenny Senior Hurling Team prospects. Offally have not defeated Kilkenny since the All-Ireland hurling final of 1998.

Lenrec Ltd Recycling Company in Kilkenny offers sporting clubs an opportunity to help raise extra funds. This has been very successful mainly due to the help of parents, club members/non members and the wider community. Collection Date for our Club is Saturday 29th June. (By booking a collection date, people get involved straight away and start putting items aside. Sometimes, having no date means it gets left on the long finger or may never happen): What you can do to help us is really very simple: From now until collection date 29th June, please text your family & friends outside the club and parish and ask if they could fill a black bag or maybe even two with some or all of the items listed below: Keep the collection date in mind, start your recycling now, get the kids to recycle: During the coming week two black bags with a list of the items required will be dropped to every house. To make this as easy and as successful as possible, we will collect and store your items. All you have to do is fill the bags, then you can either drop them to the Danesfort GAA Club on Wednesdays or Fridays between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.
