Birthday wishes go out to Eamon Ryan Moate Road and his twin sister Deirdre who celebrated a very special birthday at the weekend. Eamon and Deirdre marked the 40 at a party with family and friends in Farrells Function Room on Saturday night last.
Freshford/Threecastles Community Alert group will hold a sponsored walk on 24th August at 3pm. Cards are available at present. Please support this event. All proceeds will go towards the costs of security cameras being provided in the village at present.
Frances and Peter Theloke of Clashacrow held an open Weekend in their Garden at Clashacrow on Saturday and Sunday last with tea/coffee and home baking.
Ballydaniel National School 1890 – 1972. As a Gathering event there will be an evening to remember students and teachers both living and dead who were part of Ballydaniel National School, Threecastles on Friday the 20th September. There will be a special mass of remembrance in Tulla Church at 7.30p.m. After the mass a Memorial plaque created by local sculptor Ruairi Carroll will be unveiled. This will be followed by light refreshments in Campions Bar Threecastles. Please tell your friends and relations who live away about this special event in time so that they can join in.
Freshford Golf Society hold their next outing in Rathdowney on Saturday next the 24th August. All welcome.
ST LACHTAINS CHURCH
Morning prayer was held in St. Lachtains Church of Ireland on Sunday morning last. Also as part of Arts & Heritage week the Church was open from 12 - 6pm. At 3pm Cannon Patrick Comerford, Lecturer at the Church of Ireland Theological Institute, gave a talk on the history of St. Lachtains. Also, Mike Cantwell curated an art exhibition of his work and work from other local artists.
You could take a self guided tour of the Church using the information panels in the Annex also. Holy Communion in St. Lachtains Church of Ireland is at 10am on Sunday 25th August. Sympathy is extended to Sr. Brigid and Sr. Peggy of Prague House , Freshford on the death of their brother in law, Mr. Dominic Browne, which occurred in Co.Tipperary last week..
Freshford Town soccer club Committee are busy working getting ready for he new season. Having one some on the field over the summer months and the building of the wall surrounding the field is still continuing and other further developments also. The new Chairman for the forthcoming season is Micheal Brophy
The Saturday morning Training sessions for U5 - U9 boys are presently closed for the holiday period and will resume in September.
The Club will enter a number of schoolboys teams and also a Mens Junior and Ladies team this year and anyone interested should contact the Club Secretary. Training takes place each for ladies on Tuesday evenings. All welcome.
Calvin Brophy of Clone was called up for trials with Ireland U15 Squad recently. He is wished all the best in the trials which will continue in weeks to come.
Boot camp fitness classes for both men and women of all ages and fitness levels are
being held in Community Hall Freshford at present. The classes are held each Tuesday and Thursday evening at 8.30pm. It cost just €40 for 8 classes. Each class consists of a combination of suspension training, anaerobic and aerobic workouts, resistance training, interval training and circuit training to help you lose weight, tone up and get fit. ST. LACHTAIN’S N.S.
The local National school is due to open after the summer holidays at the end of the month. The Early Intervention ASD Unit (for preschoolers) will open in the autumn.

Best wishes and a speedy recovery is wished to local man Gerry O’Reilly The Mills Freshford from all his friends in Freshford village and surrounds. Gerry is at present a patient at St. James Hospital, Dublin. Gerry is a popular character in the village having been an ardent member of Freshford Town Soccer Club for many years serving as Chairman, Secretary roles as well as on Kilkenny & District League for many years. He is also involved in the local Acorn Club and the National branch of the Hemophiliac Society and was involved in the Pantomime in Freshford back through the years. He is wished all the best for a speedy recovery by all who know him.
There will be a clothing recycling drive in aid of St.Lachtain’s Camogie Club on: Saturday 31st of August 2013. Time to drop off will be announced closer to the date. You are asked to please donate all your clean unwanted clothes also bed linen, towels, curtains, shoes, bags, belts and soft toys. Wearable clothes will be recycled and reused and other items will be recycled for items such as industrial wipes or soundproofing. Mobile phones are accepted but please keep separate. Books are accepted but no school books (text or copy), magazines or diaries. No household bric a brac. The Club wishes to thank you very much for taking the time and effort to support our fundraising drive.
Tenders are due in at moment for the local Sewerage scheme. The final tender documents have been issued to the 5 pre-qualified contractors for a design, build, operate (DBO) contract to provide and operate waste water treatment plants in the village of Freshford and also Johnstown and Goresbridge. Cllr. Maurice Shortall stated recently that Construction will start as soon as possible thereafter. “It is likely to be October/ November by the time a contractor starts on site.”
St. Lachtains Special Juniors bowed out of the Championship recently when they were beaten by just 2 pts by Dicksboro. Four local lads were on the Klikenny Intermediate panel which beat Galway on Saturday last in the All Ireland semi final. On the starting team were Brian Kennedy and Bill Beckett while Tomas Flynn and Shane Donnelly were on the subs bench. Well done lads.
Freshford Community Market is held each Saturday mornings in the local Community Hall from 11-00 to 1-00. There are lots of locally produced product for sale, including home baking, jams, breads, chutneys and relishes, pork products, home grown vegetables, hand made cards, aloe vera skin and hair products, and a large selection of tubberware products. Freshford and District Childcare Centre Ltd Committee Staff and Management invite parents, guardians and friends to enjoy an informative social evening and partake in some refreshments. on Thursday 22nd August from 7-9pm. The evening will given parents/guardians the opportunity to inform themselves about all state support available in Oasis; ECCE Free year, CCS Subvention, CETS and the deadline dates. Also information regarding Policies,Afterschool, Year Calendar, Open Door Policy, Security, each rooms Programme and activities. Staff members will greet the parents and people in each room to show them around and explain and guide then through their child’s years programme. The Committee and staff are looking forward to meeting current, new and interested parents. On Thursday 29th August the Childcare Centre will be welcoming all children enrolled on the ECCE Pre School scheme, CCS Subvention and CETS Scheme. SPIN THE WHEEL
The lucky winner of the Spin the Wheel in Kavanaghs Bar on Saturday night last was Frank Neary, Bootstown. Frank won €80. Second prize of €30 went to Marie Hughes. Next weeks Jackpot will be €700. The draw is held each Saturday night in conjunction with St. Lachtains GAA Club.
Kilkenny County Council recently granted planning permission for the Irish sign ‘ACHADH ÚR’ to be erected permanently on the Green in Freshford following lengthy discussions. The beautiful piece of craftsmanship was made by local man Liam Cleere of Clashacrow, as part of Freshford’s participation in An G-Team competition with TG4 in 2011. It symbolises the special place that An Ghaeilge holds in the hearts of Freshford people. There will be a special unveiling ceremony to celebrate this event and details of same will be published in the Freshford Notes .
