The Local Acorn Club presented Harvest Thanksgiving and Miscellany on Sunday last which included thanksgiving service, story telling, music, special guests and Harvest supers. Service was held in St.Lachtains Church of Ireland from 4-5p.m. and Miscellaney was held in the Community Hall from 5 to 7pm..

Gathering event

As part of the Gathering event there was an evening to remember of students and teachers both living and dead who were part of Ballydaniel National School in Threecastles recently with a special mass of remembrance in Tulla Church and after the mass a Memorial plaque was unveiled. The plaque was created by local sculptor Ruairi Carroll from Threecastles. This was followed by light refreshments in Campions Bar Threecastles

Congratulations and best wishes go out to Liz Dawson formerly of Woodview Freshford and Jack Doyle Kilkenny on their marriage on Thursday last at St.Canices Church,Kilkenny and Reception was held in Springhill Court Hotel, Kilkenny.


Starblossom Communication (Director, Mary Purcell) are commencing Speech and Drama classes in Freshford for ages 6 years and upwards. The cost is . €80 per term per child with family reductions. There will be two terms of ten weeks (September to Christmas and January to Easter). The classes will be held in the Oasis Childcare Centre, Freshford, on Friday nights. with classes starting on Friday, 20th September 2013. The children will experience a range of fun activities in puppetry, mime, improvisation, poetry, drama and lots more, and will prepare for exams with the Irish Board of Speech and Drama. The Ciorcal Gaelach has resumed and this year the Group will be preparing for The Fainne. There are three levels so everyone can take part. The next meeting is on the 9th October at 8.30pm. in Kavanaghs. All are welcome to go along and enjoy an hours conversation through Irish in a relaxed atmosphere.

After the service there was harvest supper in the Community Hall from 5-7pm. This was an evening of music, story telling and special guests hosted by the Freshford Acorn Club.

Rehearsals for this years production of Shrek are taking place at the moment on Monday afternoons from 4-6pm at Freshford Community hall. The show will be presented at the end of January.  Any children aged from 6 years up, interested in participating in the show are asked to attend rehearsals. Cost: 1 Child €5, 2 Children €8 , 3 Children €11.


Freshford Town Junior side were due to play Duncannon of Wexford at home on Sunday last in the Leinster Junior Cup competition but received a walkover. They caused somewhat of an upset recently when they beat Thomastown A in the Maher Shield competition played at Thomastown on a 3-2 scoreline. All goals coming from the boot of Eoin Vaughan

They took on River Rangers in their home league game on Sunday morning last and came out convincing winners on a 7-0 scoreline. Goals for Freshford town came from E.Vaughan (2) L. Hickey(2) C.Corcoran, G.O’Flaherty and J.Burke.

The Saturday morning training sessions for young boys from 5 to 9 years old has resumed and is held each Saturday at Sportsfield at Woodview from12noon to 1pm  

. All boys of that age group are most welcome.

The Ladies game against Piltown AFC in the Shield due to be played at home on Sunday morning last was called off.,

The Youths were due play in the Henderson Shield Competition on Saturday against Ormondevilla .

The Club have entered a number of schoolboys teams this season including U11, U13 and U15 . Anyone interested in signing up should contact the Club Secretary. There are no schoolboy fixtures as yet.

Best wishes to Local player Calvin Brophy has been called back for the final trials for the Ireland U15 squad from all at the Club.


Boot camp fitness classes for both men and women of all ages and fitness levels are being held in Community Hall Freshford at the moment. The classes are held each Tuesday and Thursday evening at 8.30pm. It cost just €40 for 8 classes. Each class consists of a combination of suspension training, anaerobic and aerobic workouts, resistance training, interval training and circuit training to help you lose weight, tone up and get fit. Freshford Golf Society had their outing to Heritage Portlaoise recently with a very good turn out on the day and some good golf. The weather was very good too. Winners on the day were: 1st –. Nigel Crosby -41ps (HC19). 2nd – J.J.Tobin -34pts (HC19) 3rd – Thomas Brennan -32pts. (HC13) 4th – Shane McGree – 31pts (HC15), 5TH – James Farrell – 30pts (HC 8), 6th Joe Colclough -30pts (HC 15)-Long Drive – Graham O’Flaherty – The Player of the Year was awarded to Shane McGree who was presented with the Martin McGree Cup. This was the groups last outing for this season.


The Blood Donor Clinic will visit the Community Centre Freshford on 
Thursday next the 3rd October. The Clinic will be held from 5.00pm to 8.300pm. New donors particularly welcome


Enrolment for 1st year takes place on next Monday 7th October in Loreto Secondary School,Kilkenny. Applications forms can be obtained from the website or at the school office. There was an Open Night for 6th Class on Wednesday evening last at the school.


St. Lachtains Intermediate hurlers bowed out of the championship recently when they were defeated by the Emeralds at Johnstown,

Meanwhile the Minors beat The Rower in the Roinn A League final recently. They played James Stephens last week in the first round of the championship and were defeated by a stronger city side on a 3-18 to 3-11 scoreline.

At Pairc Lachtain on Sunday afternoon last it was a very busy day with two Senior Hurling Quarter finals played at Freshford pitch. In the first game Clara beat Erins Own of Castlecomer by three points. In the second game St.Martins of Muckalee came from behind to defeat James Stephens.


Freshford community market is held Saturday morning in the community hall from 10-30am to 12-30. So along and see what locally produced products are on sale, home grown veg, chutneys, breads, jams, home baking, knit wear and pork products. Bring along a friend have a cupa and a chat. Uppercourt house will host a food and craft market . The market stared at 10am and run to 4pm and will run on the third Sunday of every month. There’s was a wide selection of fresh local produce, artisan crafts and family activities. The tea room in the Manor was also on the day. Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Bridget Murphy (nee Dawson) formerly of Bohergloss , Freshford on the recent death of her husband Shaun in London/ recently formerly of Monasterevin, Co.Kildare.

 OASIS NEWS;Freshford and District Childcare Centre Ltd Committee Staff and Management had an informative social evening recently for parents, guardians and friends to enjoy and partake in some refreshments. The evening was arranged to give parents/guardians the opportunity to inform themselves about all state support available in Oasis; ECCE Free year, CCS Subvention, CETS and the deadline dates. Also information regarding Policies,Afterschool, Year Calendar, Open Door Policy, Security, each rooms Programme and activities. . The Childcare Centre recently welcomed all children enrolled on the ECCE Pre School scheme, CCS Subvention and CETS Scheme. Oasis is now fully reopened. The Centre is open Monday to Friday each week from 8am to 6pm and would like to hear from anyone who might be interested in an afterschool service. Morning Mass in Freshford Church each morning of the week is at 9.30am except on Mondays . Mass in Prague House on Monday at 9.30am in St. Catherine’s on Tuesday at 3pm. Tulla Church – Friday at 7.30pm. Confessions in Freshford Church on Saturdays at 7pm and in Tulla Church on Fridays at 7.15m. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place in Prague house on Fridays from 10am to 5pm . All welcome.


The lucky winner of Spin the Wheel in Kavanaghs Bar on Saturday night last in Kavanaghs Bar was James Burke, Kilkenny Road. James spun the wheel and won himself €60. Next weeks Jackpot will be €850. The draw is held each Saturday night in conjunction with St.Lachtains GAA Club.

G-Day sign:

Planning permission was granted recently by Kilkenny County Council for the Irish sign ‘ACHADH ÚR’ to be erected permanently on the Green in the village. The beautiful piece of craftsmanship, which was created by local man Liam Cleere of Clashacrow, is part of Freshford’s participation in An G-Team competition with TG4 in 2011. It symbolises the special place that An Ghaeilge holds in the hearts of the Freshford people. There will be a special unveiling ceremony to celebrate this event in the coming weeks.
