Late Bridget Walsh - The people of the village and area were saddened to hear of the death of Mrs Bridget Walsh, Bohergloss Freshford last weekend. Bridget who was in her late 70’s was well known in the village and surrounding areas. Although she had been unwell recently her death caused widespread shock and sadness.

Bridget who was in her late 70’s was well known in the village and surrounding areas. Although she had been unwell recently her death caused widespread shock and sadness.

She was a proud Tipp woman and came to Freshford over sixty years ago as a young girl and later married and settled down here. She was predeceased by her husband Billy who died over 40 years ago. She was a hard working and caring mother over the years looking after a young family. She enjoyed life and was outgoing kind and good living, a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be sadly missed by her family friends and neighbours.

Her remains were removed from her home on Sunday morning to St Lachtain’s Church Freshford for requiem mass followed by burial in St Lachtain’s Cemetery. She is mourned by her sons, Danny, Martin and Michael, Daughters Margaret and Eileen, sisters, brothers, sons in law, daughters in law, brothers in law, sisters in law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a large circle of relatives and friends.

SOCCER NEWS - Freshford Town Junior had no game at the week end. They have only one game left in the league which is against Evergreen C. They are still in with a change of promotion but will depend on the last game and some other match results.

In the schoolboys section it’s a busy near end of season time and the U-12 boys have had three fixtures in recently drawing 0-0 with Evergreen away in a game they should have won. In the second game they lost heavily on a 6 -1 scoreline to league leaders Freebooters A. Despite a great goal direct from a free kick by Aidan Tallis. The third game saw them have a comfortable 3 -1 victory at home to Lions of Durrow in the U-12 Cup with two own goals and a penalty from Cathal O’Leary.  

The U-11 boys also played Evergreen City in Larchfield last week and won well on a 6 -1 scoreline. A Cian Franey hat trick lead the way to victory and further goals from Dean Brophy, Luke Holohan and Aidan Tallis sealed a great performance by the entire squad despite going behind to an early goal. 

Elijah Garrett, Cathal O’Leary and Josh McCarthy were part of the Kilkenny U-12 squad to travel to the midlands last weekend for the Leinster semi final. Adam Garrett played with the Kilkenny U-15 squad in Wicklow recently also.

The Club hold a Race night in Kavanagh’s Bar on Saturday night next April 20. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

SPIN THE WHEEL - There was no Spin the Wheel in Kavanaghs on Saturday night last. The winner the previous week was Shane McGree, Woodview .Shane spun the wheel and won himself €65. Second prize went to Patsy and Mary Brennan, Ard Lachtain. The draw will resume next week with Jackpot at €400. The draw takes place each Saturday night as part of fund raising for St Lachtain’s GAA Club.

DARTS - Freshford Darts League is now at the final stages. In the A League The Valley take on Brennans on Friday, April 19 in Connolly’s of Tullaroan. In the B League Final Farrell’s take on Connollys on May 3 in the Valley Inn.

The Shield Final will see Farrell’s take on the Valley in the final to be played in Delaneys on April 25.

NEW BARBERS SHOP - Razors’s barbers is now open at Church street, Freshford. The premises will be open Tuesday and Wednesday from 9.30am to 6pm Thursday 5pm to 8pm and Friday 9.30am to 8pm and Saturday 9.30am to 5pm, The proprietor is local Girl Pauline Butler, Threecastles and she is wished all the best in her new venture.

GAA NEWS - St Lachtain’s ran their annual Easter Fun recently with a large number of participants. Thanks to all the stewards who helped out on the day.

SQUASH - Freshford Squash Club men’s team were the overall winners of the Division one title recently. Well done to all involved. 
The annual Freshford squash tournament will take place the May bank holiday weekend, ie. Friday to Sunday, May 3 to 5. The tournament will be held in Freshford Squash Club. Freshford Community Market - Freshford Community Market is held each Saturday morning from 11am to 1pm in the community hall. There are lots of locally produced product for sale, including home baking,Jams,breads,chutneys and relishes,pork products,home grown vegetables, hand made cards, aloe vera skin and hair products, and a large selection of tubberware products. BIRTHDAYS - Birthday wishes go out to Chloe Burke, Woodview who celebrated her 18th Birthday at a party with family and friends in Kavanagh’s on Friday night last.

Edwin Brennan celebrated his 21st Birthday at a party with family and friends in Farrell’s function room on Saturday night last.

And also to Kathleen Crosby, Nuenna Court who celebrated her 40th at a surprise party in Farrell’s on Sunday night.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - Kilkenny Carlow Contract is a Community based voluntary organization for older people covering Kilkenny and Carlow area and they are presently looking for additional volunteers to commit to one or two hours per week to befriend/visit older people who are living alone in the area. 40 years of Wedded Bliss - Congratulations to Danny and Mary Webster, Graine who celebrated this 40th Wedding Anniversary on Sunday last. The couple celebrated with family relatives and friends at a function in Springhill Court Hotel, Kilkenny with Mass meal and music and dancing. Danny is well known in the music circles for many years.

SERDTF - The South East Regional Drugs task Force (SERDTF), Kilkenny Community & Voluntary Forum and Kilkenny Leader Partnership are jointly organising a community consultation Seminar on the subject of substance misuse. The seminar will be on the morning of Friday, April 19. The venue will be the Pembroke Hotel, 11 Patrick Street, Kilkenny from 9.30am to 1.30pm. A light lunch will be served. YOUTH CLUB - Congratulations to the Freshford Youth Club Girls group who won the Ossory Youth Games 5 a side Soccer Blitz on Saturday last at the Watershed. It finished with a very exciting and tense final when they took o Kilmacow Youth Club. At the final whistle it was all level which meant the game went to extra time with Danielle Phelan scoring a cracker of a goal to seal the victory for the Freshford girls. All the girls played a vital part in the victory and in all game.

The Youth Girls group are participating in a 5km sponsored fun run walk in the Castle Park on Sunday next April 21 at 11am. All are welcome to join in and the Group would like to thank everyone for their support.

Sympathy - Sympathy is extended to Mrs Margaret Lennon, Clontubrid on the death of her brother Michael Fox late of Lord Edward Street, Kilkenny which occurred recently. Burial took place in St Kierans Cemetery, Kilkenny following Requiem Mass in St Canice’s Church, Kilkenny.

DANCE CLASSES - Social dance classes are held in St Kieran’s Hall, Johnstown each Wednesday evening at 8pm. If you would like to learn to dance the Old time waltz, quick step, fox trot, jive etc, you are welcome to go along on any Wednesday evening. PARISH MASSES - Morning Mass in Freshford Church each morning of the week is at 9.30am except on Mondays. Mass in Prague House on Monday at 9.30am St Catherine’s on Tuesday at 3pm. Tulla Church – Friday at 7.30pm. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in Prague house on Fridays from 10am to 5pm.

GOLF - Freshford Golf Society had their first outing of the year in Gowran on Saturday last with a good turn out on the day. Winners on the day were: 1st G O’Flaherty, 2nd J Colclough, 3rd Tony Brennan, 4th J Farrell, Front 9 J Doheny, Back 9 S Farrell, Nearest the pin G Hughes. The Society will hold their next outing on May 4 at Faithlegg, Waterford.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT - Freshford Active Retirement Group meet every second Tuesday in the local Community Hall at 3pm with Bowling at McDonagh Junction on alternate Tuesdays.New members are always welcome. For details contact Kathleen on 8832362 or Joan on 8832316.

TOTS TO TEENS - The Local Tots to Teen group are at present planning for next years production of ‘Shrek’. The Group would be happy to take on your child or children and all children from 6- 18 years are welcome. Details can be obtained by text on 085 7679240. Places are limited. So don’t delay register as soon as possible and let you child join in the song dance fun and laughter on stage. You are reminded that if you would still like to acquire a copy of the DVD of the recent show ‘The Lion King ‘you can do so by contacting any of the committee.
