The u-8 camogie girls had their first blitz of the year last Sunday, June 23rd in Urlingford. For a lot of the girls it was their first time playing a match, so it was great experience for them, and they put on a great performance. Unfortunately they narrowly lost their first two games against Ballycallan and Clara. Their third game against Johnstown was very close throughout, and in the end they finished with a draw. Well done to all the girls. Team on the day: Louise Hickey, Ella Minogue, Rachel Phelan, Tara Gleeson, Ellen Wall, Sarah Brennan, Katelin Leahy, Rebecca Kavanagh, Aoife Kavanagh, Becky Burke, Clodagh Gleeson, Aoife Queally, Ruth Moriarty, Lily Kavanagh, Katie Mai Broderick, Sarah Kavanagh.


The second year of the Gortnahoe/Glengoole Challenge Cycle is on this Sunday, June 30th. Proceeds go to Breast Cancer Research and Gortnahoe playground. There is an event to suit all. 100k cycle starts in Gortnahoe at 9.30am, followed by the 48k cycle at 11.30am and the 15k family cycle will start at 12.30. In addition, this year there is also a 10k walk starting at 1pm. All cycles and walk will start and finish at Gortnahoe community centre where there will be refreshments provided afterwards. All cyclists must wear helmets. Your support would be greatly appreciated.


There was no winner in the Emerald’s lotto last week so prize fund is now €4,600. Jackpot is €2,600. There was 7 match 3 numbers sharing: €200: Clodagh Cleere, Niamh Ryan, T&K Kelly, Lilly Stokes, Ann Kelly, Orla Stokes, Sean Minogue. Five lucky dips of €20 each: Mary Cleere, Cathal O’Dwyer, Peg Corbett, Danny Holohan, E. Healy. Promoters prize: Norma Bergin.


Great preparation is underway for the Ossory Agricultural Show Society Co Ltd, annual show affiliated to ISA and IPS on Sunday, July 28 at the showgrounds on Mountrath/Rathdowney Road. Now in its 115 year and with so much to offer for a great family day out they are over two hundred and eighty classes. No doubt it will be a great success this year again.


Anniversaries prayed for at all Masses last weekend in Urlingford and Graine: Delia Glendon, Mary Power, Michael Power, Lughinney.


Congratulations to Mateusz Pietrzykowski, Ben Guilfoyle and Lauren Hayde for their outstanding performance at the Leinster Championships the weekend of June 15 and 16. They all did extremely well with Lauren taking home 3rd in the U17 girls javelin and Matt receiving 4th in the U16 boys long jump. As a result of their terrific effort, both Lauren and Matt will now be moving on to compete at the Nationals in Tullamore in July. Well done to all three and best of luck!

For people wanting to sort out their winter wardrobes, Emeralds Camogie Club are holding a Recycling Collection on Thursday, June 27 in the Club Rooms. Adult and children’s clothing, paired shoes, handbags and belts, bedding and towels, books and schoolbooks (not diaries and magazines). Please separate clothes and textiles from the other items. Clothes can be left into the club rooms during the following times: Today (Wednesday) 6pm to 7.15pm; Thursday, 5pm to 7pm. Clothes can be left in to the clubrooms during any Camogie training session over the next two weeks. If collection is required contact 087 6400285. Well done to this U12 team and their mentors for winning out their tournament on Saturday and well done also to the U8s and their mentors who played very well and enjoyed their tournament on Sunday.

Sale of Work/Cake Sale in aid of Irish Cancer Society / Relay for Life Kilkenny, is being held in the MFRC on Saturday, July 6 from 12 to 6pm. All funds raised will be going directly to the Irish Cancer Society. All bric-a-brac, donations etc welcome and can be dropped into the centre at any time.


Are taking enrolments at present for places for August/September 2013 for Preschool, Afterschool and Early Year’s places. Urlingford August 16 to 18. Graveyard Masses, Graine Cemetery Friday, August 16 at 7.30pm; Mill Cemetery, Saturday, August 17 at 7pm. There will be refreshments served following both masses in the respective halls. There will also be a photographic display in both halls. As the proposed publication of the history of Urlingford will not be ready it is hoped to have some promotional material ready for distribution and perhaps a few words from the author. On this weekend we also hope to host an U12 hurling tournament, field day and hopefully a re-enactment of a Fair Day. We’re also looking at the possibility of holding a fun walk along the Islands walk route. More details to follow.
