GAA - Junior B Hurling League Semi-Final: Danesfort 1-11 Blacks and Whites 0-8 Danesfort qualified for the final of the Junior B Hurling League with an excellent 6 point win over the Blacks and Whites in St John’s Park on Sunday.
Danesfort led from the outset with points from Cathal O’Neill, James Cunningham, Stephen McKenna and John Doheny. Blacks and Whites largely relied on frees to keep them in the match, but at half time Fort led by 0-9 to 0-4.
Blacks and Whites started the second half quicker and scored the first 3 points without reply to take them to within 2 points. Stephen McKenna responded with a free before the turning point in the match arrived. Blacks and Whites were unlucky to have a goal disallowed for a square-ball. From the resultant free-out, Danesfort scored an excellent goal of their own from Colm Phelan. What could have been a draw game 30 seconds earlier had now turned into a commanding 6 point lead.
Blacks and Whites were forced to go for goal for the remainder of the match but a combination of suberb saves from Patrick Tynan, stout defending from the likes of Pa Dillon and Michael Moylan, plus some near misses, meant they were never able to eat into the lead. Cathal O’Neill rounded off the scoring with a superb point from the right touchline.
Overall Danesfort deserved the win and had some superb individual performances. The goalkeeper and back 6 unit were outstanding all through, plus the midfield combination of Cathal O’Neill and Man of the Match James Cunningham won their battle. In attack, Danesfort always looked dangerous, particularly Stephen McKenna and John Doheny.
Danesfort now qualify for the final, and it’s hoped that a large crowd will come out to support the team, several of whom will feature for the senior team later in the year.
Team: Patrick Tynan, Patrick Hickey, Pat Dillon, Darren Knox, Ger Dunne, Jim Phelan, Michael Moylan, Cathal O’Neill (0-2), James Cunningham (0-2), Colm Phelan (1-0), John Doheny (0-3), Johnny Ryan, Tommy Ryan, Richie Devane, Stephen McKenna (0-4, 1 free).
