KILKENNY On Ice continues to thrill over the winter months at Cillin Hill - and it certainly has proven to be an even better experience this time around.
As a family occasion there has been nothing to surpass it in Kilkenny, certainly in recent years. Catering for all ages - and it’s not just about the rink you know, Kilkenny on Ice has been an exceptional, welcome attraction to the city.
Now there are only two weekends left, as it all wraps up on January 20.
My family have enjoyed the rink twice over the holiday period - and hope to return for a third time. While skating is a novelty for us, it certainly seems to be something that we have taken to very easily. First off the enthusiasm of the younger ones just to get their skates on and go - no fear or trepidation., For the middle aged amongst us - ok I’m heading inthat direction - the fear of a fall and a fracture can be just too daunting but believe me, when you do let yourself go its great fun.
A leisurely skate, well supervised, is something you can do with your children and have fun in the process.
And its not just for the older ones - there are thrill rides like the mammoth slide and the bungee jumping for the younger ones under four who can’t skate yet. What was a welcome addition for those just old enough to skate was those friendly penquins which help you around. If they return next year, it will be a big help.
Another attraction that should return is the Skyfall zip line. Sporadically during your skate, when you do take your eyes off the ice, you can see, usually a a thrill seeking teenager, zip across the entire rink and arrive at the other side. This was one ride I avoided. Doing a Boris Johnson would not have gone down well - and I had visions of trying to put up a ladder on the ice in the attempt of getting me down.
That has been a new attraction and the promoters of Kilkenny on Ice havethe happy knack of being able to go one better next time out.
Well, it all wraps up as the ice will have all thawed by January 20. It was great fun and great memories while it lasted. And already we can look forward to the next Kilkenny on Ice extravganaza.
In the meantime though get your last skating kick in before it all, unfortunately comes to an end.
