VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – Bart’s Cancer Charity Shop which recently opened on Main Street, Bagenalstown, is looking for volunteers. The shop is open from Monday to Saturday from 9.30am to 5.30pm. If you have a little time to spare and would like to assist please call in to the shop.

PARISH PILGRIMAGE – Bagenalstown Parish Pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick will take place on Sat. September 7. Bus with one night bed and breakfast and evening meal in McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, about ten minutes from Knock. The Parish has a team of people who have been professionally trained to support all parishioners who have been bereaved. A letter offering this confidential support is sent out to one member of a bereaved family where the funeral has taken place in Bagenalstown Parish. This support is also available to all members of the family and to bereaved parishioners where the funeral has not taken place in Bagenalstown. The Club wish to offer its sincere sympathy to the Chada and Murphy families Ballinkillen. Eoghan was a valued member of Nurney Villa Juvenile Club, while Ruarai was a loyal supporter and a promising player of the future. Sanji was a playing member of the O-35 squad and we also think of him in these troubled times. May God grant them all peace in their time of turmoil.

Brochure of activities and courses beginning in September now available at Centre or by ringing 059 9722028 for a copy. The Centre is now taking bookings for the following courses which begin in September. Fetac accredited Level 4 in Hotel Front Office Skills which provides an opportunity for participants to return to education in a relaxed and friendly environment. Courses will run for 3 to 4 mornings a week. Fetac accredited Level 3 in Woodwork.

This is a part time course, one morning a week where you can learn the basic skills of woodwork. Free to those who do not have Leaving Certificate, are in receipt of Social Welfare payments or have a medical card. Thanks to all volunteers who helped with activities on Sunday, July 21.

Craft Clubs. If you are interested in learning new crafts why not join one of the Family Resource Centre’s craft clubs. These take place on Monday mornings and Tuesday afternoons and the cost per week is only €3. Crafts will include creative sewing, mosaic, felting, card making and lots more.

The Racing Museum Committee would like to thank those who gave their assistance during the recent Festival which contributed greatly to the success of the 2 day Racing Exhibition – Richie Dwyer and management and staff at the Credit Union, Bruce Betting, Connolly’s Red Mills, the Railway House, Michael Lakes, Lori from Fleurtation, Michael McNally and the Calendar Company, Bank of Ireland and Presentation/De La Salle College, Sean Monaghan. Michael Cahill and Christy Johnson. The committee is indebted to all the local trainers, jockeys and stud farms who contributed so generously to the event which highlighted Bagenalstown as being at the heart of racing.


Borris Railway Fair takes place this coming week-end on Fri. August 9 and Sat. Aug 10.

Ducks of Borris

Fr. Pierce Murphy, former Parish Priest in Bagenalstown

has written a book The Ducks of Borris to mark the closing of the Bagenalstown, Borris, Ballywilliam Wexford railway line 60 years ago. This will be launched by Andrew Kavanagh and a cheese and wine reception will follow.

Next day, Sat. August 10, registration will take place in the Vocational School followed by talks by Olivia O’Leary, Fergus Mulligan, Padraig Cahill and others who will speak about the 100 years of the railway. During the day there will be walks and a conducted tour of the old railway from Bagenalstown to Ballywilliam. Cost Friday and Saturday (including a copy of the book) €50. Special rates if you just
