FRESHFORD TOWN NEWS - Mini Euro’s - The tournament was the curtain raiser to the Clubs Field Day recently. 11 teams took part with approximately one hundred U11 players taking part in a very entertaining tournament. At the semi final stage the draw threw up two Freshford teams one respresenting England managed by Alan Franey and the other Holland managed by Gary Barnaville who won through on penalties to earn their semi final spot. As might be expected the game was a closely fought encounter & a very exciting game with split loyalties, as the two teams know each other so well. They all play together for Freshford Town U10’s & U11’s and train together weekly, but this time they were pitted against each other. England came out as winners eventually in a very close game. The other semi final was also a tight affair with the Fort Rangers (Spain) defeating Thomastown 2-1 in an exciting game that could have gone either way with Spain just shading it. The final itself was a great game played by two great teams. Freshford (England) scored first but Fort (Spain) pulled one back to equalise and brought the game to a penalty shoot out. Spain were victorious on penalties and lifted the trophy, is this a good omen for the real event in a few weeks time! Freshford also had a third team in the competition, Italy managed by Damien Rafter who were very unlucky not to progress through to the knock out stages. Special thanks goes to all the managers, players & visiting parents and families and to Damien Rafter & Jimmy McCarthy who refereed lot of games on the day and to all the other referees who helped out and Alan Franey who organised the event. The Freshford teams were as follows:
Italy - Eoin Kenny, CJ Daly, Kyle Dawson, Jack Crosby, Stevie Dunne, Luke Campion, Alan Rafter, Mark McCarthy Aaron Kirwan.
Holland - Willie Cahill, Killian Dunne, Eoin Delaney, Luke Holohan, Josh McCarthy, Cathal O’Leary, Tommy Rafter, Frankie Keoghan & Odhan Bergin.
England - Eddie Cahill, Cormac Rafter, Mikey Neary, Dean Brophy, Aidan Tallis, Elijah Garrett, Cian Franey & Mark Donnelly.
Field Day -The second annual field day took place at a sunbaked Woodview grounds recently The day itself was a great success and the soccer field and the lower pitch where the mini tournament took place looked highly impressive & immaculately turned out. A big thanks must go to Liam ‘Ducks’ Phelan who worked tirelessly to have the grounds looking magnificent. The day itself was action packed with many games and competitions happening from traditional field games to numerous soccer competitions like penalty shoot out to radar gun measuring the speed of your kick, a rodeo bull and lots of inflatable items including a Bungee Run and a means Tug of War competition won by the ‘Freshford Cadets’. The large crowd enjoyed the ‘craic’, BBQ, ice creams and the wonderful cakes & buns baked by parents, friends and familys of the club, all the food went down a treat! A big congratulations must go to the organising committee who did a lot of work behind the scenes for the past few weeks to make the day such a success. On the day itself many people helped to steward, run stalls & shops & cook at the BBQ’. There are too many people to mention but a sincere big thank you to all from Freshford Town AFC, your hard work and efforts was really appreciated.
