A NEW Health and Fitness centre was opened last Saturday at Lower Bridge Street Callan and with it comes a state of the art fitness facility for Callan and the surrounding areas. Husband and wife pair Rachel and Peter Nolan are highly qualified fitness and swimming instructors and Rachel is also is a Zumba and already holds classes in Callan already. Zumba is craze that has swept the country in the past three years and caters for all age groups and is a fantastic way of getting fit and its excellent for the cardio vascular fitness. Peter is originally from Killenaule and Rachel from Piltown and are both living at Piltown. Both have been fitness instructors for five years and are well known around the South Kilkenny and South Tipperary area. The classes available at the new facility at Lower Bridge Street will entail one to one fitness, boot camp and general classes in fitness. WEDDING CHALLENGE - A young Callan couple are in with of a big chance of winning a €20,000 wedding prize. Anita Duffy and Noel Power who live at Bolton Woods are one of five couples from the South East Region who have been picked as part of a Beat FM promotion. Last weekend they were chosen after completing a number of tasks as well as composing and announcing their marriage vows. They have now been set a task of raising as much money for their chosen charity for the remainder of this week. Anita who’s family own ‘Scruffy Duffys’ Bar on Mill Street has set herself some serious and daring tasks. Anita admits to having a serious fear of vermin, snakes and especially spiders, but there is a big prize at stake so if she raises €1,000 by Thursday (tomorrow) she has agreed to travel to the retile village in Gowran and under the supervision of Callan native James Hennessy she has agreed to sit in a tank with spiders, snakes and vermin. Well as she said its in a good cause as their chosen charity is Crumlin’s Children’s Hospital who need to raise €8 million for a new unit. Both have also come up with another novel idea to raise money. On Saturday afternoon beginning at 3pm a special ‘Camp’ football tournament will take place at the rear of Scruffy Duffy’s. So all you lads out there who have that slight feminine side to you, why not rob the wife’s, grannies or girlfriends cloths and kit yourself out for a day of fun which will round off with a Barbeque. So go dig deep for a good cause and in turn raise funds for Crumlin. BOXING - Callan Boxing club will hold a mini tournament on Thursday evening at their club Rooms at Clonmel Road. They were to take part in a tournament during the Abhainn Ri Festival but as weather conditions were poor they cancelled the event, so Jimmy Walsh and his crew are doing this as part of pre season preparations. Its for the younger age groups in the club and with Ireland doing so well at boxing in the Olympics there is plenty of enthusiasm for the sport. So get along on Thursday evening from 7pm with all proceeds going to Crtumlin’s Childrens hospital.
FIFTY YEARS ON THE GO - A well know and popular couple hit the momentous figure of fifty years of marriage on the 8th August. Molly and George Foley of Canafahy celebrated the big occasion with their family recently and have received many congratulations from many. Of course the two were very popular when they worked at the Olde Charter when George junior was under the care of the popular establishment. George Senior retired from Smithwicks Brewery some time and left city life behind for the joys of country life at Canafahy beside their daughter Trish and husband Jimmy O’Brien. So when you see Molly and George out and about for their daily walk say hello and congratulate them of reaching such a milestone of true love.

TALENT SHOW - The ‘Olde Charter House’ will hold a massive Talent Show on August 18th.
