Junior Hurling - Congratulations to the Blacks and Whites junior hurling team who defeated Cloneen in the 1st round of the Junior Hurling Championship in Bennetsbridge last Sunday. The Skeough side opened brightly with Tommy Farrell pointing in the first minute followed by a great long range effort from Niall Kennedy. Kennedy then added a free before Paul Murphy latched on to a break from the Cloneen puck out and raced 40 yards before crashing the ball to the cloneen net. A fantastic start and Blacks and Whites were hurling with confidence, determination and combining well. Something that wasn’t as evident throughout the year but then the championship is a different game. Cloneen did rally but relied totally on the free taking ability of Ronan Walsh who pointed 5 in the first Half. At the other end, the skeough lads were keeping the scoreboard moving in the right direction with some excellent scores from Niall Kennedy, Shane Murphy, Michael Moloney, Tommy Farrell and the pick of the bunch from Paul Murphy who swung over a great point under pressure and on the sideline 50 yards from the target.
Blacks and Whites deservedly led at half time 1-09 to 0-05 and looked good value for their lead. Skeough continued their dominance early in the second half with good scores again from Kennedy and Moloney and when Tommy Farrell gathered from a Michael Doyle delivery and kicked to the net the game was up. Cloneen to their credit did not give up and when a long delivery from Kevin Philips wasn’t dealt with by the skeough defence Noel Roche was on hand to scramble home. Lively corner forward Pauric Delaney then added another minor score from an acute angle to give Cloneen some hope. Running at The Skeough Defence Brain Cahill was fouled and up stepped Ronan Walsh again to crash home the resultant 21 yard free and suddenly the gap was narrowing.
However Blacks and Whites steadied the ship again and a clever free from Peter Cleere gave Tommy Farrell time and space to point. This was followed by a brace from Moloney and with time just up, the game was decided. There was time for 1 more goal chance as Michael Moloney looked to smash the ball to a near empty goal, a Cloneen player game from nowhere to deny the score and leave the scoreline reflective of their second half efforts at least. Final Score Blacks and Whites 2-15 Cloneen 2-08.
Blacks and Whites were well served in Defence by Peter Cleere and Barry Moloney. Paul Murphy at Mid Field was out standing while up front Niall Kennedy, Michael Moloney and Tommy Farrell proved most potent. The next game will be either the first or second week after this weekends All Ireland Final depending on who Blacks and Whites are drawn against.
