Award - On Tuesday the 18th of September Cois Bearbha Co Operative Society were awarded the prize of Best in County Kilkenny and 3rd over all by the Barrow Awards 22 . In early June Cois Bearbha Co Operative Society entered the Barrow Awards Scheme, the intention being to clean up and promote the walk way along Cois Bearbha and the park area. The initial short term project was to organise a picnic area within the park. There is a stone picnic table currently on order and delivery is expected in the coming weeks. New signs have also been organised for the park. This signage will be located at the entrance to the park along with information giving a brief history of the park. The name of the park, Cois Bearbha has been engraved in the granite stone at the entrance.
The long term project is to develop the walk from the park to the weir. Over time the walk way has become overgrown creating issues with accessibility. To date, it has been widened and cleared up and three new flower beds introduced and the old benches have been restored. A new fence has been erected which allows the grass behind this to grow wild with the idea of attracting more wildlife. In addition many native flowers have been sown in the beds in keeping with the park and the natural environment. Along the walk way the native Irish Kennedy Primrose has been sown.
All of this and the success at the Barrow Award Scheme could not be achieved without the commitment and effort of all those involved with Cois Bearbha Co-Operative Society. The committee would like to especially thank Tom O Neill, Mathew Murphy and Kevin Walsh for their help and expertise. The focus now is to promote the park and the walk way throughout the community and the county. The committee are currently working on having more signs put up with directions to the park. The National Parks and Wildlife services are advising the committee with information regarding the Flora and Fauna of the park and this information will be on display for all to read.
