SOCCER-Freshford Town Junior side came through a tough challenge in Clare on Sunday morning last in the driving rain to claim a 3-2 victory with virtually the last kick of The game and a great goal from Shane Maher. The Freshford lads started slowly and were 1-0 down after just two minutes following indecision in defence. Midway through the first half they equalized with a fine finish from Michael Burke following a good heAder on from Jamie Burke. As half time approached Shane Maher finished off a fine move involving Jamie Burke and Jonathan Doheny. In the second half and with the rain refusing to let up the local boys created some good chances and but for some poor finishing and hard luck could not find the net for the third goal to finish off their opponents. To the home sides credit they refused to give us and with five minues to go they got a somewhat dubious penalty and converted to make it 2-2. However with time running out Freshford got a free kick 3 yards out from goal and Liam Hickey delivered the perfect pass to Shane Maher who slatted home the winner form just 5yards out which set up some wild celebrations. Great credit to Clifden who put up a fine challenge on what was an awful day. Best for Freshford on the day were Shea Burke and match winner Shane Maher. Team : S.McGree, D.Burke, E.Hayes, M.Farrell, D.Burke, S.Burke, S.Maher,J.Burke,M.Burke, J.Doheny, L.Hickey-Subs-G.Bassett, F.Lawlor, J.Kennedy.
The U11 boys were in action on Saturday last in Woodview against Evergreen City and the Freshford boys were on top form all day and dominated the match from start to finish. Cian Franey got the only goal of the game with a well taken long range low drive that beat the keeper. Dean Brophy, Alan Rafter, Aidan Tallis, Cormac Rafter, Killian Dunne & Willie Cahill all went close to scoring but the Evergreen keeper gave a great display and was by far the busiest player on the pitch pulling off save after save to deny Freshford more goals. It was a great result and strong performances by all squad members with Jack O’Sullivan making a great Freshford debut at right back & Mark McCarthy pulling off a great interception in the dying minutes to deny Evergreen a certain goal.

Within the First 15 minutes Freshford went one up scored by Jason Stanley but less than five minutes later Thomastown got the equaliser. L.Bassett scored Freshfords second goal and at the half time whistle it was 2 - 2. Freshford looked the stronger side and it was’nt long until James Sweeney hit the back of the net for the third and final goal of the match.
