SHAVE OR DYE - A Shave or Dye event in aid of cancer research was held in the GAA Clubhouse on Saturday night last and turned out to be a brilliant success, raising a considerable sum for this worthy cause. Participants Padraig Downey, Shane Mulhall, Murty Leahy, Declan Downey, Tony Gunner and Paul Buggy generously took part in the event along with a surprise participant Milo Maher, who had his beard shaved for the occasion.
The hairdresser who kindly provided her services for the occasion was Deirdre Leahy. An auction of a signed Kilkenny jersey and hurley, which was also held on the night, raised a significant sum for the cause. Well done to all concerned on such a successful fundraiser, particularly all the participants who took part.
FOOTBALL - The senior footballers’ were left rue a number of missed chances as they were defeated by Glenmore in a JJ Kavanagh and Sons Senior Football league tie which was played in Glenmore on Saturday last. The home side exerted a strong dominance throughout the pitch and an over-worked Conahy defence did well to hold the winners to 1-5 in the first half. Conahy failed to register a score in the opening half, but that should not have been the case. A number of excellent scoring chances were squandered and that included a goal which was cleared off the line by a Glenmore defender.
Half time changes which saw John Muldowney moved from goal to centre half forward, substitute Sean Brennan to goal and another substitute Shane Brennan to the attack made an immense difference to the visitors during the second half. Conahy also played with much more determination and purpose during the second thirty minutes. Two superb goals by John Muldowney brought the margin back to two points at one stage, but the Glenmore forwards managed to escape the close marking Conahy defence on a number of occasions to score some fine points. They had chances of goals also, but an alert Sean Brennan made a number of excellent saves. Conahy had some late chances to tie the game, but overall the home side were the better team and deserved its success. The second half saw a very brave effort from the Conahy men, but the damage was done during the first half. Conahy’s final league outing takes place in the Polo Grounds next Saturday afternoon when the visitors will be facing the reigning Kilkenny Senior Football champions Muckalee.
