St.Lachtains U14 girls had a great win over Windgap in the St.Canices Credit Union U14 C Final played at Kilmanagh on Saturday last. This was a great victory for the girls who came out winners on a 5-2 to 2-4 scoreline. Well done to all the girls on the team and panel and their manager Michael Farrells and all his helpers and the parents who helped throughout the year..

Well done to the Un18girls who reached the Minor League Final where they were defeated by Muckalee recently. Its all systems go now for the Championship. Meanwhile the Seniors got their championship off to a winning start in Pairc Lachtain recently with a convincing win over Dicksboro. Next championship game will not take place until after the Camogie All Ireland, local girls Ann Dalton and Lydia Fitzpatrick are part of the senior squad

Gathering event - Ballydaniel National School 1890 – 1972
As a Gathering event there will be an evening to remember students and teachers both living and dead who were part of Ballydaniel National School, Threecastles on Friday the 20th September There will be a special mass of remembrance in Tulla Church at 7.30p.m. After the mass a Memorial plaque created by local sculptor Ruairi Carroll will be unveiled. This will be followed by light refreshments in Campions Bar Threecastles. Please tell your friends and relations who live away about this special event in time so that they can join in.
SPEECH AND DRAMA CLASSES – Starblossom Communication (Director, Mary Purcell) are commencing Speech and Drama classes in Freshford for ages 6 years and up. €80 per term per child with family reductions. There will be two terms of ten weeks (September to Christmas and January to Easter). The classes will be held in the Oasis Childcare Centre, Freshford, on Friday nights. Registration will be at 6 pm on Friday, 13th September 2013, with classes starting on Friday, 20th September 2013. The children will experience a range of fun activities in puppetry, mime, improvisation, poetry, drama and lots more, and will prepare for exams with the Irish Board of Speech and Drama. Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Kathleen Kenny Barna and her family on the death of her
mother Mrs. Mary Stokes, late of Two mile Borris which occurred last week. Burial took place in Two mile Borris Cemetery following Requiem Mass in local Church.
Freshford Town Junior side had their first game of the season when they took on Thomastown B at home on Sunday afternoon last. The local side got off to a slow start and found themselves 1-0 down after just five minutes but came back to equalise. They then went 2-1 down but came more into the game and finished the stronger winning on a 4-2 scoreline. Scorers for Freshford Town were Graham O’Flaherty, Stephen O’Mahony, Eoin Vaughan and Michael Burke.
The Saturday morning Training sessions for U5 - U9 boys under the tuition of Gary Barnaville which was closed for the holiday period will resume shortly at Woodview from12noon to 1pm
The Club will enter a number of schoolboys teams, Ladies team also this year and anyone interested should contact the Club Secretary. Training takes place for ladies on Tuesday evenings. All welcome.
Boot camp fitness classes for both men and women of all ages and fitness levels are being held in Community Hall Freshford at present. The classes are held each Tuesday and Thursday evening at 8.30pm. It cost just €40 for 8 classes. The local people were shocked and saddened last week to learn of the death of Mrs. Monica Crosby late of Ballyroe, Freshford The deceased who was only in her 60’s was well known in the village and surrounding areas . She had been unwell recently but her passing caused wide spread shock and sadness. She was a friendly hard working lady, a devoted wife and reared a large family . Of a very quiet and unassuming nature. Her remains were removed to St. Lachtains Church and burial took place in St.Lachtains Cemetery following Requiem Mass. She is mourned by her husband Joe, sons, Danny, Tommie, John, Chris, Michael, Joe, Kevin, Denis, David, Ken, daughters, Liz, Michelle, Kathleen and Bernie, grandchildren, great grandchildren and large extended family to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

SEWERAGE WORK Tenders are in at moment for the local Sewerage scheme. The final tender documents have been issued to the 5 pre-qualified contractors for a design, build, operate (DBO) contract to provide and operate waste water treatment plants in the village of Freshford and also Johnstown and Goresbridge. Cllr. Maurice Shortall stated recently that Construction will start as soon as possible thereafter but it is likely to be October or November by the time a contractor starts on site. .
St. Lachtains Intermediate hurlers were beaten recently by Tullogher in the league.
Four local lads were on the Klikenny Intermediate panel which were beaten by Tipp in the All Ireland final on Saturday last. On the starting team were Brian Kennedy and Bill Beckett while Tomas Flynn and Shane Donnelly were on the subs bench. Shane was introduced late in the game. Well done lads.
Bord na nOg - The Under 10 hurlers travelled to Carlow at the weekend to take part in a tournament hosted by Carlow Town Hurling Club. They played three games - against O’Dwyers of Dublin, St. Martins Ballyfoyle and St. Oliver Plunketts of Dublin. They lost their first game but won the other two. They also played matches in the previous weeks against Ballycallan and Johnstown. This is a great bunch of players where all participated and played well. RACE NIGHT - St Lachtains Gaa club are holding a race night in St James park greyhound stadium on Friday next the 6th of September at 8-30 pm. Members of the club will have tickets for sale at a cost of €10 which includes admission and race card. Freshford and District Childcare Centre Ltd Committee Staff and Management had an informative social evening for parents, guardians and friends to enjoy and partake in some refreshments recently. The evening was arranged to give parents/guardians the opportunity to inform themselves about all state support available in Oasis; ECCE Free year, CCS Subvention, CETS and the deadline dates. Also information regarding Policies,Afterschool, Year Calendar, Open Door Policy, Security, each rooms Programme and activities. Staff members greeted the parents and people in each room to show them around and explain and guide then through their child’s years programme. . On Thursday evening last the Childcare Centre welcomed all children enrolled on the ECCE Pre School scheme, CCS Subvention and CETS Scheme. Oasis is now reopened after their summer break. The lucky winner of the Spin the Wheel in Kavanaghs Bar on Saturday night last was Alan Rafter Junior, Woodview who won himself €70. Second prize of €30 went to Tom Hayes, Ard Lachtain. Next weeks Jackpot will be €800. The draw is held each Saturday night in conjunction with St.Lachtains GAA Club.
Kilkenny County Council recently granted planning permission for the Irish sign ‘ACHADH ÚR’ to be erected permanently on the Green in Freshford following lengthy discussions.. The beautiful piece of craftsmanship was made by local man Liam Cleere of Clashacrow, as part of Freshford’s participation in An G-Team competition with TG4 in 2011. It symbolises the special place that An Ghaeilge holds in the hearts of Freshford people. There will be a special unveiling ceremony to celebrate this event and details of same will be published in the Freshford Notes
