Bereavement - The community of Stoneyford were shocked and saddened at the tragic death of Jim Butler last Thursday May 30. Jim was 58 years old and lived all of his life in the Stoneyford area. Most of his life was lived in the family home in Knockdrina but in latter years he lived in Stoneyford village. He was son of the late Tom and Peggy Butler and was predeceased four years ago by his brother Paddy. Jim was a great supporter of all sporting organizations in the parish and played hurling with Carrickshock. In his earlier years he won an u14 county final medal with Aghavillar school team.
He also played socccer with Stoneyford and in recent years was one of their best supporters always wearing his Stoneyford FC jacket. He was also an avid fan of Liverpool FC. Jim would also have been known as a G.A.A. umpire, his proudest moment was when he was umpire at the Centenary All-Ireland in Thurles which was refereed by Pascal Long. This game can be seen regularly on the RTE programme “Reeling in the years” and Jim can be seen proudly waving the flag. Jim worked for years in the building industry but it is in latter years that he will be remembered for his work on the fás ascheme where he took care of the playing fields and the community hall.
His remains were removed to St. Brendan’s Church on Friday evening where a large crowd of people had gathered to form a guard of honour which was made up of Stoneyford soccer club, Carrickshock hurling club, Stoneyford Development Association and his many friends in the Stoneyford community. His remains were received at St. Brendan’s Church by Fr. Liam Cassin P.P. and Requiem Mass was celebrated on Saturday morning before burial in Stonecarthy Graveyard.
He is survived by his brothers Peter and Tommy, his sisters, Ann. Kathleen. Brigid and Margaret, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, Nephews and Neices, relatives and friends.
