FRESHFORD CONNECTION - The Tom Sempell Cup competition was held recently in Thurles with twelve teams taking part in the competition in all. The final saw Kilburn Gaels of London take on Dunboyne and the Kilburn side came out winners and retained the Cup for the second year in succession. Freshford had a special connection and interest in the competition with local lad John Joe Burke of Woodview, Freshford playing in goal for the Kilburn Gaels winning side. Well done John Joe.

CABARET -There was a Fundraising cabaret held in Kavanaghs Bar on Saturday night last in aid of Prague House. Music was by The Kitchen Session with Liz Kett and Tony Coy and numerous local artistes taking part. There was a door prize and Raffle also on the night. Among the lucky winners were – M. Bergin (3) J.McCarthy, M.Tobin, L.Beehan, J.Meagher, B.Heffernan. The Committee wish to thank all those who supported this fund raising event and all those who sponsored prizes or donated in any way.

SOCCER - Training has resumed for the Junior soccer team in preparation for the forthcoming season and will continue every Wednesday evening at the Sportsfield at Woodview at 7.30pm. They will play in the 2nd Division this season. Meanwhile Work is continuing in the pitch at present for the forthcoming season. BOWLING - The annual Bowling Competition at Cascade which was due to start last week had to be put back due to bad weather and is hoped to start shortly. UPPERCOURT RESTAURANT - The newly refurbished and luxurious Loop Restaurant at Uppercourt Manor, Freshford which opened recently to the public is doing well at present . SYMPATHY - Ms. Ann Turner who died in England recently was member of the Campion family of Cascade and Sympathy is extended to her family. Also sympathy goes to the family of the late Bridget Barry ( nee Egan) formerly of Killaree, Threecastles, who died in Ballincollig Co.Cork recently.

GAA - St.Lachtains Intermediate Hurlers had a fine win over neighbours St. Patricks of Ballyragget in Lisdowney recently winning on a 2-16 to 2-12 scoreline. The Junior B hurlers lost out to Cloneen last week in their game on a scoreline of 3-12 to 2-12 in the North Junior B League/Championship. Meanwhile on Sunday last the Junior A team lost out to Young Ireland of Gowran by 0-13 to 1-7 in game played in Gowran. On Friday evening net they play St. Martins in Pairc Lachtain in the next round of the North League/Championship. The Minor Hurlers had a convincing win over Kilmacow last week in game played in Freshford. This result put them into second place in their group and into a league semi final. They now await the results in Group 1 to find out who they will meet in the semi final. They take on Rathnure of Wexford in a challenge game in Rathnure this week. The U14 hurlers play Slieverue in the league playoff this week in Bennettsbridge (see results). The U16 Hurlers play Harps of Durrow on this Thursday evening in a challenge game in Freshford.

Bord na nOg –- St. Lachtains Bord na nOg held a very successful Cabaret in the Rock Bar on Friday night last with Music by the Abbey Folk. The Committee thank all who supported the event. CAMOGIE - The Senior Camogie Girls made it three out of three in the 3rd round of the league with a 3 point win over Muckalee in Pairc Lachtain on Monday of last week . With a mixture of youth and experience, the local girls were first on the scoreboard with points from play and placed balls from Imelda Kennedy. Midfield duo of Cora Dowling and Lydia Fitzpatrick swept tirelessly over and back keeping supply to a minimum in the Muckalee forward line. Young star Sarah Lanigan gave a fine performance creating many scores and causing major upset for the Muckalee backs. The local girls led at the break 0-11 to 2-02. Immediately after the throw in of the second half Lydia Fitzpatrick burst through the Muckalee defence laying off a precise pass for full forward Marie O’Connor who finished with a fine goal. Muckalee responded with some points from play and frees while Freshford did the same with Lydia Fitzpatrick and Imelda Kennedy. The local girls played well in defence with strong performances from Eileen Fitzpatrick, Denise Daly and Fiona Dowling and gave little breathing space to the Muckalee girls. In the end it was the second half goal by Freshford that was the difference between the sides with Freshford girls winning on a scoreline of 1-17 to 3-08. Freshford now qualify for a league semi final spot in August. A medal presentation to the Senior Camogie Team took place on Friday in The Rock Bar, these medals were for last years 2011 county final win over rivals Mullinavat where a select few players received their 12th senior medal for the club! The camogie club will be holding a cake sale on the August Bank Holiday weekend, on Sunday 5th August after 11am mass. There will also be a clothes collection at the end of August ( further details to follow). Meanwhile the u-10,s blitz went in Freshford grounds went very well recently. The local girls beat Paulstown then drew with Urlingford and were then defeated by Conahy. Many thanks to all parents who helped with the catering The U-12girls defeated Dicksboro last week by 8-3 to 3-1 They defeated Paulstown on Saturday of last week by 8-1 to 1-0 Well done girls and keep it up.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT GROUP - Freshford Active Retirement Group meet in the local Community Hall each Tuesday at3pm with new members always welcome. The members travelled to Bishops Palace, Waterford recently and were taken on a very interesting tour of the building . CEMETARY MASS - The annual cemetery mass will be held in Tulla Cemetery will be on Friday 3rd August. People are reminded to clean up their family graves for this occasion.

Spin the Wheel - There was no Spin Wheel in Kavanaghs on Saturday night last. The winner of the previous week was Joe Dermody,Lodgepark. Joe spun the wheel and won himself €50. The winner of second prize was Billy Walsh, Kilrush . The draw will resume next week and the Jackpot will be €500 . The draw takes place each Saturday night and is organised by St Lachtains GAA Club as part of their fund raising and is held every Saturday night in Kavanaghs bar..

St. Lachtain’s N. S. News - The process of enrolling new pupils for the school year 2012/2013 is currently under way in St. Lachtain’s N.S., Freshford and will continue into the summer holidays. Afterschool Service -Oasis, Freshford & District Child Centre. Oasis Childcare Centre will be providing an Afterschool service from next September 1.30 - 5.45. The service will include picking up your child at the school, bringing them to Oasis where they will receive a hot meal followed by supervised study for approximately 1/2 hour. The remainder of the time will follow an exciting programme of activities indoor and outdoors. Fee: €13 per day. If you are on a social welfare payment you would be eligible for Subvention (CCS) Oasis when the charge would be €3 per day for the complete service.
