THE South Kilkenny Historical Society is taking part in several upcoming events, starting with a visit to the Castlecomer Discovery Park on June 4. This will include a tour of ‘Footprints in Coal’, which explores the area’s mining heritage from the early extraction of coal in the 18th century to the closure of the mines in 1969.
Clonfert and Clonmacnoise will be visited on July 9. Clonfert was founded by St Brendan the Navigator in the mid-sixth century and was provided with diocesan status at the Synod of Rath Breasail in 1111. This year marks the 900th anniversary of Clonfert as a diocese.
The society is also organising a visit to Áras an Uachtaráin and as part of Heritage Week 2011, and it has organised a cruise of the River Barrow on August 20. This year is the 220th anniversary of the opening of the River Barrow as a navigable waterway.
