Callan lost its oldest resident over the weekend with the death of Kathleen (Kit) Power.
Having celebrated her 100th birthday last summer, the resident of Mount Carmel nursing home passed away peacefully in the home on Saturday.
A Callan native, Kit moved to England in the late 1920s and worked in a factory there, where she met Mick Power. They married and had one son, Eddie. When Mick died in 1969, Kit returned to Callan, where she lived with her sister Nell and her late husband, Jim Burke, on Green Street.
After her retirement, both Kit and Nell moved to the bungalows at Mount Carmel when they were built in 1996, and she moved into the house itself in 2004.
This weekend, Kit’s funeral prayers were held on Sunday evening, followed by removal to The Church of the Assumption, Callan. Requiem Mass was held on Monday morning, followed by burial in Kilbride Cemetery, where Mick and Eddie are also laid to rest.
