WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT BRIDGE AND FORGOT - Learning From A Poor Suit. (cont. from last week). West led the Diamond 7 which we recognise as MUD, the middle of three small cards (Middle – Up- Down). Had West held 8752 she would still have led the 7. The traditional approach to leading from a poor suit was to lead the highest card (Top of Nothing). However, the modern approach is to lead the SECOND HIGHEST from a poor suit; the seven from 973; 9753; 97532 and so on. The thinking is that a card such as the nine or eight should not be wasted to follow a blind principle, top of nothing. Retaining a high-spot card may prevent declarer winning a trick with a smaller card later in the play. Next week The Rule of Eleven and Declarer.
