GO ON RANGERS - It was a good weekend on the playing field for Fort Rangers with 2 teams defying the horrible weather, and both emerging victorious.
The brave chaps on the Under- 9 squad battled freezing wind and rain to beat near neighbours Stoneyford Utd on a 4-1 score line. The goals scorers were Charlie Moran, Matthew Cowley and Aaron Moore. Pride of place this week, however, goes to Fort’s Under-19’s who played in the same conditions against a very good Clover Utd. team and came out 3-2 winners after extra time to earn a place in the Youth’s shield semi final. Fort had hit a sticky patch lately after a great start to the season and this game was important to try get the season back on track. Clover are top of the league with a 100% record so managers Jack Fitzpatrick and Jim Nugent knew that a mighty effort would be required to get that badly needed win. The first half was very equal with both teams playing good football despite the weather. Goalkeeper John Rice made 2 fine saves to keep the Laoismen at bay while Emmet Nugent saw a penalty saved brilliantly by the Clover custodian. The second half burst into life after just 10 minutes when Dion Fitzpatrick calmly finished to the net from the edge of the area to give the locals a massive boost. Things got better for Fort and Dion when just 5 minutes later he ran on to a great through ball and produced a suberb finish to give Fort a 2 goal lead. However, Clover are not top of the league for nothing and stormed back into the game to score twice and force extra time. The first period was uneventful but the second period was a good battle with both sides working hard to claim a winner, and it was fitting that this fine match should be decided by a great 20 yard strike. Up step Dion Fitzpatrick to produce that strike and complete a fine hat trick to deservedly send Fort through to a first ever Shield semi final for the club. This win was even more special as it came on a day when the locals were missing 4 players for a variety of reasons, proving that the strength of the squad is of a high standard. Hopefully this win will kick start the season for the lads who to a man played out of their skin, and a trophy may well be on the horizon. Team; John Rice, James Tynan, Ger Dunne, Seamus McGrath, Paddy Tynan, Dion Fitzpatrick, James Lenihan, Darragh Hennessy, Donagh Kearney, Emmet Nugent and Peter Butler. Sub; Jason Doherty
