Freshford -

SOCCER NEWS - Freshford Town Junior side took on Evergreen C at Freshford on Sunday afternoon in the League. The home side went 2-0 up and lead at the break. However the visitors kept plugging away and when the got a goal back early in the second half they raised their game and Freshford then had a player sent off and Evergreen side kept piling on the pressure and eventually got the equaliser. The game finished 2-2.

In the schoolboys section the U- 12’s are at home to Freebooters A in a league match this Thursday evening at 6.30pm.

They are also due to play Lions in a cup match at the weekend.

Best of Luck to Elijah Garrett, Cathal O’Leary and Josh MacCarthy who will be part of the Kilkenny U-12 squad to travel to the midlands for the Leinster semi-final at the weekend. Also well done to Adam Garrett who played with the Kilkenny U-15 squad in Wicklow last weekend.

Training for U-9 boys continues with Gary Barnaville this week and every Saturday from 12 noon to 1pm. All boys form 5 – 9 age group are most welcome.

Work is on-going with the clubs development. Great progress is being made on the further development of the club, the foundations for the new sideline dugouts has already been laid

The club were presented with a new set of jerseys during the Cabaret recently. The presentation was made to Manager by Pat Brennan of KC Security Alarms Systems. The Chairperson thanked Pat on behalf of the team and Club for his generous sponsorship which he said is very much appreciated in the present day.

The club hold a Race night in Kavanagh’s Bar on Saturday, April 20. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Sympathy - Sympathy is extended to Seamus Byrne Sart and his family on the death of his granddaughter Orlaith Moylan of Nenagh County Tipperary who died last weekend. Six year old Orlatith was daughter of Garret and Marie Moylan (nee Byrne). Burial took place on Tuesday following Mass of the Angels. She is mourned by her parents, twin sister Clodagh, grandmother, grandfather, uncles, aunts, cousins, relatives and friends.

TOTS TO TEENS - The Local Tots to Teen group are at present planning for next years production of ‘Shrek’. The Group would be happy to take on your child or children and all children from 6- 18 years are welcome. Details can be obtained by text on 085 7679240. You are reminded that if you would still like to acquire a copy of the DVD of the recent show ‘The Lion King’ you can do so by contacting any of the above committee.

GOLF - Freshford Golf Society hold their first outing of the season at Gowran on Saturday next April 13 with tee off at half eleven. New members always welcome.

SPIN THE WHEEL - The lucky winner of Spin the Wheel in Kavanaghs on Saturday night was Shane McGree, Woodview. Shane spun the wheel and won himself €65. Second prize went to Patsy and Mary Brennan, Ard Lachtain. The Jackpot next week is €400. The draw takes place each Saturday night as part of fund raising for St Lachtain’s GAA Club.

St Lachtain’s Church of Ireland - Please note there is no service on Sunday, April 14 in St Lachtain’s Church of Ireland. However the United Service is in St Canice’s Cathedral at 11.30am and all are welcome. Should you require pastoral care from one of the Church of Ireland clergy, please contact 7721516.

Darts - Freshford Darts League is now reaching the final stages. In the A League The Valley beat Farrells in the first semi final recently. In the second semi final Kavanagh’s took on Brennan’s of Kilmanagh in Farrell’s on Sunday evening last. Brennan’s went into a 4-1 lead and looked like winning easily but Kavanaghs lads came back bravely and made it all square at 4-4 and all to play for going down to the last game. Brennan’s eventually won after go through to the final. Meanwhile in the B League Farrells easily beat Kavanaghs and now meet the winners of The Valley and Connolly’s of Tullaroan in Brennan’s.

GAA NEWS - St Lachtain’s Hurling and camogie clubs ran their annual Easter Fun recently with a large number of competitors on the day and it was great to see such a large number of young runners take part this year. Thanks to Martin Power, to all the stewards and all who helped out on the day.

Local businessman and selector Liam Walsh made a Jersey presentation to the Minors recently in the club rooms. Liam presented the jerseys to Chairman of Bord na nOg Sean Boland.

Membership is due for renewal for the coming year. Members of the committee will soon be doing the rounds collecting membership and we would urge you to be part of your local club. Players membership €100, ordinary membership €40, social membership €30 and Bord na nOg membership €20.

St Lachtain’s Hurling club ran their annual Easter Fun Hurling Camp last week and it was a great success. There was a large number of children from our own club and surrounding clubs in attendance. Co-ordinator David Condon thanked Irene Bergin and Breda Dermody for all their work leading up to and during the week. Thanks also went out to Sharon O’Leary and Martina Dowling and to all the coaches and helpers who done great work during the week, B Whitty, L Tiernan, M Walsh, P Campion, B Quinn, B Barnavill, G Rafter, D Rafter, M Farrell, S Faerell, A Condon, C Power and J Garrett. The Club also thank the county players who attended the Camp on Friday last, Paddy Hogan, Richie Doyle and Lester Ryan. 

FOOTBALL - St Lactains under 14 footballers took on Railyard in a chilly Pairc lactain on Sunday last in a keenly contested Roinn D 13 aside Championsip  semi final, with the local boys winning on a scoreline of 2-9 to 2-3 after the game was taken to extra time. The team showed great spirit and character  coming back from a 4 pint deficit in the final minutes to level the game and taking it to extra time in which the St Lachtains boys showed great team work led by Sean Rafter and Colin Rafter in the middle of the field. Ricky Burke manned the post and pulled off a fantastic save in the first half to keep the boys in touch. Patrick Killeen and Kevin Cleere were steadfast in defence along with a tenacious half back line of Padraig Donnelly, Ciaran Colough and Ciaran Dalton. All the forwards worked tirelessly after being reduced to 12 with the sending off of Cathal Power following two yellow cards. Darragh Maher led the charge ably assisted by captain Cameron Mullan, Phillip Hayde and Tommy Rafter who replaced Jordan Burke who had to retire following an injury. Subs CJ Daly, Cathal O’Leary and Elijah Garrett contributed to the team also with their craft and skill. The St Lachtain’s scores came from S. Rafter (1-4), C. Rafter (0-4), T. Rafter (1-0), E. Garrett (0-1).

SQUASH NEWS - Congratulations to the Freshford Squash Club men’s team who were the overall winners of the Division one title. Well done to all involved.

The annual Freshford squash tournament will take place the May bank holiday weekend, ie. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 3 - 5. The tournament will be held in Freshford Squash Club. Freshford Community Market - Freshford community market is held each Saturday morning from 11am to 12-30 in the Community Hall. There is a good variation of locally produced products on offer, from home baking, jams, knit wear, handmade cards, chutneys, relishes and pork products. The group are presently looking for new stall holders to come along and sell their wares in the market. Please support your local market and go along, meet with friends and have a cuppa. HAPPY BIRTHDAY - Birthday wishes go out to Michelle Bowden of Clone who celebrated her 30th Birthday at a party with family and friends in Kavanaghs on Saturday night last.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - Kilkenny Carlow Contract is a Community based voluntary organization for older people covering Kilkenny and Carlow area and they are presently looking for additional volunteers to commit to one or two hours per week to befriend/visit older people who are living alone in the area. If you would like to become a volunteer or if you need any support or information you can talk to them confidentially on 056 775198.

OASIS CENTRE - You are reminded about registering your child at the local Oasis Childcare Centre. As numbers are at present very high in the Oasis Centre it is s recommended that parents who are hoping to enroll their child/children in the Centre for next September should do so immediately. This includes 2013 Pre school places, CCS and CETS places. The Committee will do all they can to accommodate everyone’s needs but there are only a limited number of places they can provide and the Centre will operate on a first come first served policy.

SERDTF - The South East Regional Drugs task Force (SERDTF),Kilkenny Community & Voluntary Forum and Kilkenny Leader Partnership are jointly organising a community consultation Seminar on the subject of substance misuse. The seminar will be on the morning of Friday, April 19. Places can be booked at 051 841144.

DANCE CLASSES - Social dance classes are held in St Kieran’s Hall Johnstown each Wednesday evening at 8pm. If you would like to learn to dance the Old time waltz, quick step, fox trot, jive etc you are welcome to go along on any Wednesday evening. PARISH MASSES - Morning Mass in Freshford Church each morning of the week is at 9.30am except on Mondays. Mass in Prague House on Monday at 9.30am St. Catherine’s on Tuesday at 3pm. Tulla Church – Friday at 7.30pm. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in Prague house on Fridays from 10am to 5pm.

Walking Club - RTE John Murray Walking Club hold their next walk on Sunday next April 14 in Cullahill from 11am. The events of the day get underway at 11am with the launch of the South Laois Tourism Trails Brochure and Tourist/Heritage Brochure. The official walk start is 12 noon.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT - Freshford Active Retirement Group meet every second Tuesday in the local Community Hall at 3pm with Bowling at McDonagh Junction on alternative Tuesdays. New members are always welcome. For details contact Kathleen on 8832362 or Joan on 8832316.

Thai Chi meetings will be held on Monday nights in Community Hall after the Christmas Break. New members welcome also.

ALL WEATHER PITCH - The annual soccer league on the All Weather pitches in Colaiste Mhuire will start hopefully in the next ten days. At present any group with approx 8 players can enter and it is hoped all teams will have at least one game per week over the next two months. With the long evenings approaching and now a chance to keep fit.  You can enter a team by contacting John Cahill on 086 0485328.
